Philips PET941D/37 Portable DVD Player with 9-Inch LCD, White Review

Philips PET941D/37 Portable DVD Player with 9 inch LCD, White

I received this portable DVD player as a surprise birthday gift recently.I have to say that so far I'm delighted with the machine. The first pleasant surprise is that it was charged up and ready to go, right out of the box.I haven't taken so much as a look at the instructions yet, but have found every aspect of the player's function to be user-friendly and easily intuitive (which coming from me is saying something).

Another reviewer complained about the picture quality.I find it to be perfectly fine.My one tip would be to make sure you've got the screen angled properly for best viewing.Additionally, the sound quality, in particular the volume level, was far superior to an Insignia portable player I was using a few weeks ago.The included remote control was also significantly better than the other brand, as it had more features available such as on-screen display, angle, and zoom.

I've spent hours at a stretch watching DVDs on my player, and I've yet to see a low battery indicator. The long battery life is fantastic!Again, the 5+ hour battery life was about twice that of the other DVD player I tested. In addition to the typical charging and connecting cables, the Philips player comes with a protective neoprene sleeve for when you're traveling with your DVD player. It's very basic, but serves a purpose. The machine is certainly small and light enough to slip into a carry-on or even large purse without too much fuss. This isn't a top of the line portable player, but seems like a reasonable value for the price. The construction feels sturdy. The design is sleek. And this small luxury item meets all of my needs.

This is a decent radio made by GE. After reading the other reviews from other manufacturers, I was worried about buying a cheaper model that would fall apart. This model does have a real LCD screen and digital tuner. This model is well made, the buttons, screen and remote feel solid. It was worth spending a little extra money to get something better quality.

Sony D-NE510 ATRAC3/MP3 CD Walkman Review

Sony D-NE510 ATRAC3/MP3 CD Walkman
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I normally don't review electronics, but so many people before me have knocked this great player down and I have to correct the myths.First of all, this is NOT a MP3 player. It's a CD player that plays MP3 cd's that you burn yourself. It also plays ATRAC and ATRAC+ cd's which is Sony's version of MP3 that compresses files to 1/2 the size of MP3's and retains the quality. Most of these people before this review are not well versed in MP3/CD players as evidenced by the one that thinks this is an simply a MP3 player and doesn't know how to hook it up to "get music" (why do these people bother posting and skewing the reviews is beyond my imagination).I'm reasoning that most of these people never bother to read directions and simply jump to a negative conclusion when they can't figure something out.Let's face it, technology today is complicated and learning how to read is the first step so READ THE INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!!
This is a great cd player for the money. The sound is loud and crisp (when you use the first bass setting) and I'm really picky about bass. However, buy a good pair of headphones.Sony "mega-bass" is the best.As with all players, the ear-wear is always poor quality and the player WILL sound poor no matter what. The software is so completely fool-proof that the people complaining about it probably aren't running a system that's up to date and don't understand the problems with Windows 98 or never defragmented their system. It's simple to use and runs EXACTLY like the software that came with the Intel MP3 player from a few years back.I used the ATRAC+ conversion at 64 kbps (equivalent to 128 kbps for MP3) and was able to get over 300 songs (26 cd's) at an average of 4-5 minutes each.If I used ATRAC (not the + one), I'd probably get 50 less. The sound was not compromised at all.I WAS SHOCKED!Keep in mind I have a $20 pair of headphones and I haven't listened to it in my car or home stereo (or with the cheap headphones that came with). The file compressions to ATRAC+ did take a while but only a fraction longer than regular MP3 converting. There is one problem though, when you already have a MP3 file to convert to ATRAC or ATRAC+, the software doesn't allow you to cancel and you need to control+alt+delete to abort if you change your mind.SONY should patch this problem and I intend on letting them know about it on their support page (which is very good by the way!).
The buttons are easy to use and I have no complaints except for the fact that you can't shuffle play the first track in each file you create on the CD.The player will only randomly select so you may get up to 2 tracks from the same file played after each other (a very minor issue and I never had more than 2 songs from the same file play together). The instruction manual is a little vague in some spots but I was able to easily figure things out by simply play around with it.
I wanted a player to bring to work that had all my favorites songs on one disc.I was able to achieve this with ATRAC+ technology. This way I can bring double the amount of music with me.I cannot recommend this player enough!!I usually buy small electronics made by Phillips because I've had good luck with them. This is not the first Sony cd player I own.I've not been happy with other Sony items I've bought (5 disc cd player, portable cd player a few years back and an amplifier) so I hesitated when buying.I have a SONY Vaio PC and have had no trouble with it.I also like my Sony Cybershot camera so I thought I'd give them another try.I'm glad I did!

Product Description:
Get the most from digital music with Sony's DNE510 portable CD player, which includes SonicStage CD Simple Burner software so you can take advantage of ATRAC3plus, Sony's proprietary music-compression technology when making custom MP3 CDs on a computer. The player includes Sony's popular Jog Dial control for easy folder navigation, a two-line dot-matrix display, and achieves up to 40 hours of continuous playback on two "AA" type batteries (not included).
ATRAC3plus is a high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3plus, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting you select the right balance between fidelity and storage space (you'll get around 490 songs per disc at 48 kbps). The player comes bundled with Sony's SonicStage CD Simple Burner software. Compatible with ID3 tagging and most CD burners, this application transfers songs from CDs or MP3 music files from a PC's hard drive and burns them to a CD using ATRAC3plus compression.
Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. Bookmark playback lets you program favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button, and CD Text support displays artist and title information with compatible commercial audio CDs.

Sony RDR-VX560 1080p Tunerless DVD Recorder/VHS Combo Player Review

Sony RDR-VX560 1080p Tunerless DVD Recorder/VHS Combo Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Finally, a DVD Recorder and VHS combination unit that allows you to view DVD and your old VHS through your HDMI connection. That's right, you read that correctly. One of the biggest drawbacks of earlier upscaling machines from a variety of manufacturers was that you STILL had to use primitive S or RCA cables to output VHS images onto your HDTV.

Like many folks, I still have a large collection of movies on VHS (for some films, it remains the only version in print), but I was not going to buy another VCR unless I could really view them on my Samsung HDTV. Some VCRs connect with component cables, but cost as much (if not more) than this combo unit, which is so feature laden that I'm glad I waited.

The upconversion is very impressive so far for both DVD and factory VHS releases (lets face it, grainy home recorded VHS copies of TV programs will never look sharp at 1080p, so keep that in mind) and the controls are no more complicated than the average machine (which, may in itselfbe a problem for some already).

I have yet to fully utilize all the features, including the use of my Sony HD digital camera or camcorder, but those were secondary parts of the purchase. For me, the fact that I can now view my VHS library (and non-Blue Ray DVD library) on my HDTV through HDMI with such impressive image quality is more than enough to satisfy me.

If you are in the market for a combo unit to use with your HDTV, then this may finally be what you and I have been waiting for. Stellar product.

Why 4 stars? Well, I've only had the product a week, so it is too early to throw a 5th star onto the score, but it certainly merits 4 right out of the box.

I recently purchased this DVD since mine broke, and this thing is nothing short of amazing.I had an older Sony dvd player I got in 2000 and it finally went, and after having so many years out of my first Sony dvd player I thought I should stick with them, and I am glad they did.First off when it says it plays all those formats it really does.I have burnt DVDs along with some VCD and SVCD and it never flinched at any of them. Also the startup time and the disc recognition time is very quick.Plus on top of everything else for all this the item costs roughly $75, and to think my first Sony was $299.99 and it wouldn't play anything but store bought CDs or DVDs.If you are looking into DVD players in this price range I highly reccomend anyone purchasing this, you will not regret it.

a wave.
* Mic recordings still sound incredible
* No check in - check out, but you still have to use SonicStage Software to transfer music to player

CONS

Sony MZ-N10 Net MD MiniDisc Player/Recorder (Silver) Review

Sony MZ-N10 Net MD MiniDisc Player/Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, let's get this straight: the Sony MZ-N10 is NOT a top-of-the-line recorder. It is mostly a music file transfer, storage and playback device. It does not come with a microphone; therefore, recording sound with it as packaged is not possible. However, you can purchase a mic and use the unit to record, but the limitations are severe, as I'll explain below. You can record from any analog source but again with sever limitations. I will split my review into two parts: (a) hardware, (b) software. The hardware for the MZ-N10 is superb. The unit is unbelievably small and yet has both a feel and look of quality about it. The sound it produces is exceptional. The mechanical function of the unit is a little unorthodox and takes a while at the manual to master, but that's to be expected when packing so many features into such a small unit. The rotating 'Jog Dial' also pushes laterally to navigate many features, and this may confuse you at first if you've not seen that type of mechanism before. It comes with an attachable battery pack (one AA, not included) that should but does not have to be attached when in use. The pack does make it bulkier, heavier and more fragile. It attaches to the USP port, and the cantilevered pack if it should sustain a blow, could damage the unit's USB port. The connection of the unit to its power docking station (also through the USB port) is simple and positive. The computer USB connection is made through a second USB port on the docking station. All this hardware, including the attachable 'remote' is well designed and functional. I'll be honest, I simply love the hardware. It is truly one of the marvels of 21st century technology. The software, called SonicStage, is another story. Why Sony calls many of the functions of the MZ-N10 'recording' is a puzzle until you read the manual on its operation. The process of transferring a music file from your computer into the device is called 'recording,' a rather significant misnomer, in my opinion. In this mode the unit is a MUSIC transfer, storage and playback device. The manual talks exclusive of 'song' transfer, and it calls the transformation process 'recording'. When a song is transferred into the unit it is 'Checked Out'. And when the song is returned to the computer, it is 'Checked In'. While the song (file) is Checked Out it cannot be uploaded to another computer. The software blocks the transfer. The song can be played on the unit any number of times, but it can only be Checked Out three times. Another sever limitation comes if you want to create a CD. Here is the quote from the user's manual: 'In order to create your original audio CDs with SonicStage, you must use a Sony VAIO series computer only. The computer must be pre-installed with Windows XP and come with a recordable optical disc drive.' Now for the recording problem. As I said above, you cannot record sound with the unit as packaged. You must purchase an external microphone to record sound into the unit. I purchased Sony's ECM-MS907 stereo mic. It works great. Another fine piece of Sony hardware. The mic plugs into the 'Line In' port. The operation is then straightforward, and the recorded sound is crystal clear. You can use either a mic or record directly from any audio analog signal. Here's the problem. You cannot upload the recorded sound through the USB computer connection. The software is designed to block transfer (say Check In) of any sound files that have not first been Checked Out from the computer. I record animal sounds, bird calls, night sounds, and create sounds for website buttons, etc. I also import sound from my Yamaha keyboard. You CAN get the recorded sound into your computer by connecting a stereo wire from the unit's 'Line Out' port to your computer's sound card. A very easy operation, but you must also purchase software that can capture the incoming sound. (I use SoundForge.) So the unit has digitized the incoming sound and then regenerates an analog signal to export it to your sound card. Your capture software then must re-digitize it. You have to adjust the sound using the volume control on the MZ-N10. This is an unnecessary lossy process, and you will not get anywhere near as good sound as you would have if the software had permitted you to import the sound directly from the unit into your computer through the USB port. My results are terrible. You could have simply connected the analog device to your sound card and eliminated the two conversions inside the MZ-N10. So the ability to record through an extra-purchase mic is a minor (should I say bogus?) feature of the unit and should not affect your purchase decision one way or the other. In my opinion, the software cripples the function of this unit to the point where it is not worth the money. To call transferring digital sound files 'recording' is simply not correct. All this software slight-of-hand has obviously been caused by the hysteria in the music industry over pirated songs. Hopefully Sony will quickly come to its senses and release another driver for this marvelous and expensive piece of hardware that will allow it to unfold its wings. It along with the Sony mic would be a miniature portable stereo recording studio par excellence in the field.

Product Description:
The MZ-N10 Net MD Walkman recorder is the ultimate tool for creating great-sounding music mixes as well as live voice or music recordings. It transfers music at up to 64x speed, and the included SonicStage Jukebox software stores and manages digital music files, custom playlists, and music transfers, making it a cinch to transfer music to the device. A stereo minijack mic input accepts a range of microphones and is convenient for a variety of applications, and the unit comes with a built-in rechargeable battery capable of boosting battery life to 58 hours of playback when used in conjunction with a single AA battery.
Taking advantage of high-speed transfers from a PC via a direct USB connection, the MZ-N10 can record more than five hours of music on one 80-minute minidisc (using LP4 mode). It also uses Sony's skip-free G-Protection technology, which eliminates or reduces skipping during many active uses. The MZ-N10 is compatible with the RealOne music player and the pressplay.com online music subscription service. It plays back ATRAC3 files and supports multiple Internet audio formats, including MP3, WMA, and WAV. The unit provides up to 56 hours of continuous playback on one AA battery.
Recording is faster and easier than ever using the long-play LP4 mode and a supplied matching USB cradle with a direct connection to the jukebox. Placing the unit in the connected cradle also ensures that it automatically recharges.
The MZ-N10 also features an editing remote with a backlit LCD and a three-line dot-matrix display that shows nine characters per line for easy song searches and edits. Sony's Jog Dial navigator scrolls through track lists vertically to search for songs and groups--you can access desired points by simply rotating the dial with one finger then pushing it. A handy feature called Personal Disc Memory stores your preferred settings for listening volume and other functions when playing your favorite minidiscs.
The Easy Skip group-folder function helps you organize songs into albums or groups. Once transferred to the MZ-N10, you can easily skip from group to group. Besides the bundled SonicStage software and SonicStage simple burner application, the MZ-N10 also includes software for creatively organizing your music. MoodLogic software goes beyond typical jukebox applications, letting you compile music by mood or tempo rather than simply by artists and song titles.
MoodLogic corrects your file information by identifying and re-titling mislabeled tracks during ID3 tag cleaning. It also has a feature called Music Marker, which lets you "tag" music during playback. Once you reconnect the device to your PC, MoodLogic retrieves the marks, connects you to the Musiclub Web site, and provides you with information about the song and artist as well as with links to download new tracks, purchase CDs, or discover similar artists.
Here's how you can use the included Sonic Stage Software to manage your music files:

Sony DVPNS725P Progressive-Scan DVD/CD Player Review

Sony DVPNS725P Progressive-Scan DVD/CD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The picture quality of Sony DVPNS725P is better then SONY DVP-NS425P in 480i & 480p mode.No distortion or blurring is found even w/o the progressive scan, just a little gritty.Once you turn on progression scan the picture clears up.Sony DVPNS725P has only a 10% difference in sharpness/clarity/color/hue/contrast between 480p progressive scan & 480i non-progressive scan mode. However, I believe that the unit's 12 Bit Video DAC with 108Mhz processor, regardless of 480i to 480p mode is why you see such little difference. The vertical lines simply double using the same picture quality in 480i mode improving video clarity overall.
Equipment:
TV: Sony Grand WEGA 42" KF42WE610
Video Monster 3 Cable: 1-Meter Coax Cable, 1 Meter Monster Video 3 component Cable
WARNING, WARNING, WARNING!
Component/Coax wires do affect the quality of your home video experience. The best DVD player connected to the best Plasma/LCD/DLP/LCOS TV will have negative effects on picture quality if you are not using the best grade of Component/DVI/Coax cable.Yes, you will have to shell out more money for theses accessories (in my opinion Monster Cable has proven itself in my house). However, this is the only way to achieve your large screen TV's maximum video performance. It appears that it's not only necessary but simply required!I get mad every time I read negative reviews on this DVD player or my TV when they never invested in high-grade video cables or, their TV is only 480i compatible & not 480p compatible (they can't properly use the DVD player's progressive scan feature). Please check your manual to verify 480p compatibility for your TV, as some are only 480i compatible while others are only 780p to 1080i compatible!!!
Here is a tip to improve picture quality for analog cable/antenna viewers:
Use a A/C powered, 2 port, coaxial, Electroline Drop Amp to improve analog cable
reception. The 18 gauged Satellite coax cable runs from the cable co. to the Electroline Drop Amp in my house. The 1 Meter Monster Video 3 coax cable (gray colored wire) will run from the Electroline Drop Amp to the TV thus improving picture quality.
Summary:
If you own a 32" to a 19" TV the SONY DVP-NS425P is more then adequate. However if you have a TV larger then 32" you need this DVD player along with high-grade component/dvi/coax cable to produce the clarity/color/contrast/hue necessary for a great theater quality picture.

Product Description:
High-end video performance can be yours with Sony's affordable, progressive-scan DVP-NS725P DVD player. The versatile unit plays just about any disc out there--including DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW--and also plays hours of music from MP3 files burned to CD-R/CD-RW discs.
Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVP-NS725P stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs through Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive de-interlacer (scanning) with 3:2 pulldown processing. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.
Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can also be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for a simpler connection to a compatible AV receiver (digital-audio interconnects are not supplied).
Precision Drive 2 provides a mechanism for reading DVDs that are in less-than-perfect condition, eliminating errors in playback due to imperfect, scratched, or warped discs. DVD resume memory kicks in whenever you stop a DVD. Later, when you come back to it, the player will pick up right where you left off before. The player holds resume points for up to 40 discs.
Other playback options include 10-second instant replay, quick setup, DVD/CD Text, a digital video enhancer, digital video EQ (equalization), custom parental control memory for 40 discs, Advanced SmoothScan and SmoothSlow Modes, and multidisc resume (up to 6 discs).

Pioneer BDP-320 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Review

Pioneer BDP-320 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
PROS: Excellent AQ/PQ for BD. Very good upscaling for DVD. Ability to decode dts-hd MA. Bd-Live enabled. Source-Direct video output option. Sleek design. Sturdy disc-loading tray.

CONS: SLOW operation. DVD layer change delay. KURO Link doesn't work if connected to a KURO TV via non-pioneer receiver. No blue light on Standby/On button as pictured in stock photo.

This was my upgrade from the PS3 and as far as PQ/AQ is concerned, I am very satisfied. I've always put image quality over speed, but I've been spoiled by the speedy operation of the PS3. The 320 is slow all around, including: start-up, eject, disc-loading, fast forward/rewind command and BD menu navigation (in certain discs like 'Saawariya'). The worst part for me is having to wait for the disc tray to open during start up. It only takes 30 seconds, but when you are standing in front of the player to put a disc in, and not on your couch, it feels a lot longer.

The DVD Layer-change delay is very annoying. A 2009 BD player should not have this issue, period! Especially Pioneer since its previous generation of players (BDP-51) had been plagued with this issue and they had a long time to correct it for the newer units. Many older DVD players costing 1/10 its price don't even have this problem. Its very dissapointing.

HD picture quality is absolutely stunning. Its slightly better than the mighty PS3. In source-direct (my default setting), the picture is slightly more neutral and less-noisy, as if there is less video processing. You'd have to look hard to find the difference though. SD upscaling is also very good. It comparable to the Reon HQV thats in my AVR. Audio quality is about the same as the PS3 when decoded internally and transmitted via HDMI. However, I find my Onkyo 885 doing a better job at decoding. When bitstreamed, Dolby digital track sounds much more dynamic and robust and the bass is more actively present. I've compared it with the DRC turned off on the player. I haven't tried the analog outputs.

Overall this player is O.K. I would recommend the bdp-51 (its cheaper and has better build) if your AVR can docode the high-res audio and you don't care too much about BD-live. If I had a choice, I would get the Oppo bdp-83 over the 320/51 for about $200 more. Its faster, has an excellent Anchor Bay VRS scaler, ability to play SACD/DVD-Audio, and customer service and product support you can count on to fix bugs (if any). Since the 320 is fairly new and has the potential to accommodate major firmware updates with its larger ROM, it may be possible to improve its performace in the future, but as of now, the player gets 3/5 rating in my book. Pictures posted on customer image section.

Edit (12/28/09): With the latest FW update (ver. 3.41), pioneer has resolved the DVD layer change issue. Coupled with the recent price drop and performance improvements, this is the best blu-ray player in its price range.

Sony DNE330BLK Psyc ATRAC CD Walkman Portable Compact Disc Player Review

Sony DNE330BLK Psyc ATRAC CD Walkman Portable Compact Disc Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I originally bought the highly rated 320 version of this and returned it. The 320 islast years model, the 330 is this years, thats why there are few reviews for this one, it was just recently released. It had a problem and would skip tracks in the last 10% of the CD.I can attribute that to maybe a bit of bad luck, maybe a defective piece.Stuff happens! But I really hated the design and layout of the controls. My fingers are too big, design is poor.

So I replaced it with this model. No problems with skipping and the controls make sense!!

As far as sound goes, it blows away my little MP3 player.Which BTW doesn't show up in iTunes since I bought an Intel iMac.I found a way to get around it, but it was a hassle.

Now all I have to do is pop a 700mb cd into the player, hit play and it sounds great. When I'm alittle bored with what I hear, drop a different 700mb of mp3s into the player.EZ PZ

I'm finished with solid state MP3 players and hard drive MP3 players.I've seen the future. The future is cheap CD players that play MP3s.

Sony BRAVIA EX 400 Series 32-Inch LCD TV, Black Review

Sony BRAVIA EX 400 Series 32 inch LCD TV, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here's my simple review of this Sony TV.

General outline of features:
1080p resolution
Picture adjustments
Audio adjustments (synthetic surround sound, bass, treble)
USB device support
HDMI x4
ECO-friendly options (power save level I and II)
Ambient sensor

The picture quality is outstanding, there are numerous adjustments to make the picture look the way you want. Other adjustments include audio and settings for features. Full HD 1080p only makes it look even better. Sony advertises this TV with the "ambient" sensor that detects the lighting situation in your room so that it adjusts the backlight of the TV to compensate. I did some tests with the sensor on or off and it didn't make that much of a difference but the ambient sensor does work, it will decrease the backlight of the TV if you're in a dark room (or at night) and increase it if the room is lit up. Features also included with this TV is the ability to play music, photos and videos from a USB device which is great but I don't see myself using it. The thing that stands out with this TV set is its design. It looks like a piece of art once you remove the packaging materials. There are an influx of ports and connections on the rear and side. Component, composite, HDMI, Audio, VGA, you name it, it will have most likely have it.

My only two minor gripes about this TV is that the tuning is responsiveness of the TV's menu and tuning is fairly slow. It's not slow to the point where it bothers you but I'd say from the moment you push the channel up button on the remote until the time it actually displays the picture is around 2-3 seconds. It's not bad but its a minor gripe of mines. Another gripe I have about this TV is the price. It's certainly on the costly side for this class of TV but I believe it makes up for it in the design aspect. So if you're willing to spend a little more money to get a TV that actually looks great, this TV is a good choice.

Overall, this TV is great for the person who is willing to spend a little more money to get something that looks great without sacrificing picture quality.

Sony BRAVIA EX 400 Series 40-Inch LCD TV, Black Review

Sony BRAVIA EX 400 Series 40 inch LCD TV, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to say, I really like this TV.My previous LCD was a Samsung 32" 720p - and this set blows it away in almost every aspect.I think I paid around $550 for the Samsung a little over a year ago, so I jumped at the chance to upgrade to the EX400.

Pros:The ambient light sensor works terrific.
-4 HDMI inputs!Plug away my friends.
-Bravia Sync feature works great with my Sony home theater system.
-PS3 games have never looked better.I played Killzone 2 right after I setup the TV and my jaw was open for about 10 minutes straight.
-It only has a 60Hz refresh rate, but I've yet to see any blur while watching sports.
-DVD's look fairly crisp as well, considering I have a cheap DVD up-converter.
-It's a Sony!I'm sure some ppl have had bad experiences with Sony, but I've had nothing but luck.To each his own I guess.

Cons:The remote is junk.It looks cheap and it isn't very functional.
-The grey panel on the front.I had a bigger problem with the online picture of the set than I do in person. It doesn't look THAT bad - but it still throws off the continuity of the black perimeter.Strange call by Sony.
-Calibration is frustrating. There are so many different picture settings you'll probably struggle to find the perfect setup.I used the DVD THX Optimizer (found it on one of my Star Wars movies) and it helped a lot.(I posted them on [...])
-If you're using an antenna instead of cable/satellite you'll find that channel surfing is a bit slow. This is kind of a nitpick, but the channels take a little longer to load on this set.
-No swivel?I knew this set didn't have it before I bought it - but it would still be nice.

For around $600 you can have full 1080p AND a 40" screen.Great TV - great deal.

Sony RDR-VX555 Tunerless DVD Recorder/VHS Combo Player Review

Sony RDR-VX555 Tunerless DVD Recorder/VHS Combo Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First let me say that I did not purchase this item to record from broadcasts. I bought it to use as an easy way to transfer video/audio data from VHS to DVD. I wanted to upgrade the storage media for all of the home movies of my family. I can remember when a simple VHS player/recorder cost in excess of $700, so imagine my delight when I came across this item, for just over $200. It is almost too simple. Drop in a VHS tape of your own making, and a DVD (I use DVD-R 4.7g blank media). Push one button. Bam. It begins the Dub process. Easy. And very good. After you make the copy, you are almost finished, you must finalize the disc. Again easy, as explained on page 88 of the manual. Something like two or three options in the menu, and it does it. Now it will play in almost any other DVD player. My Mac did not recognize the disc when I inserted it into the DVD tray on my G4 PowerMac. It just showed up on the desktop as a Sony Disc, or something. DVD player in OS X played the file fine. However, to get it into your Mac, to edit, as I wanted to do, you need to use something like Toast (I have Toast 7.0) Dragged the file over, and toast did the rest. Now the file Toast made from the Sony file is in iMove, waiting for me to edit. Again. Quite simple. The manual does explain that if this unit detects any copyright signal from another source, it will not copy from that source. (Be it a DVD, VHS, or Broadcast from your cable/Dish provider) Something to consider if it is your plan to duplicate copyrighted material. This is not the proper forum for the discussion of 'Legitimate Back-Up vs illegal duplication (aka Piracy), But I felt for the money, this unit does what it says it can do. And it does it well. Personally, I am biased, in that I really like Sony products. Please take that into consideration as well, as you consider this purchase.

Sony SLV-D350P DVD / VCR Combo Review

Sony SLV-D350P DVD / VCR Combo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first bought this, DVDs would freeze at times and the image would decay to pixels at times.I contacted Sony customer service and they said that it was due to finger prints or scratches on the DVDs.After I had the machine for about 2 to 3 months, the DVD player stopped reading DVDs completely.I again contacted customer service and they told me to ship it to Texas and that they would send me a refurbished machine for ninety dollars.Actually, ninety was the minimum cost for labor since the warranty only covered parts. It could cost more if any of the parts were not covered by the warranty.Considering the cost of the machine, this was not a good option.I am stuck, but I hope that others won't make the same mistake and buy this machine. Also, after I ran into problems, I looked on Amazon for reviews of similar Sony DVD players.Sure enough, others had the same problem.

Product Description:
With its WEGA-styled chassis, Sony's SLV-D350P is the perfect high-convenience complement to today's silvery home-entertainment components. This versatile combination deck offers the convenience of VHS recording and playback and high-end progressive-scan DVD performance, handling just about any conceivable media format, from VHS and S-VHS tapes (which it plays at standard VHS resolution) to DVD-Video, video-mode DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW, as well as MP3 CD and JPEG picture CD. From your library of VHS videos to your digital music files and digital photos, the SLV-D350P lets you enjoy them all in the comfort of your living room or bedroom.
Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SLV-D350P can deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Other DVD functions include bookmarking, picture zoom, parental lock, and a screen saver.
The VCR section offers one-month, eight-event advance programming to commercial skip. Your camcorder or gaming console plugs right into the front panel for hassle-free connections. Its four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. Its 19-micron heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing in EP (extended-play) mode.
Commercial skip makes it easier than ever to zip past commercials and unwanted "coming attractions," jumping forward 30 seconds for every press of the commercial-skip button.
Connections with combo units are often inconvenient, forcing you to use separate video hookups for each section (DVD, VCR), a problem for older TVs. This player has it figured out: a single RF or composite-video connection to a television will display either the DVD or the VCR signal, depending on which format you're viewing. If you want to view DVDs in S-video or in component-video (either interlaced or progressive-scan), you will need to use two inputs, as the device will not upconvert the signal from the VCR to either of those higher-resolution formats. Not to worry, though: any component- or S-video-equipped TV will offer sufficient inputs for both of the SLV-D350P's formats.
It's a different arrangement for audio: you can listen through a single set of stereo analog-audio cables for each component (one is supplied), or--if you want to enjoy DVDs in discrete 5.1-channel surround sound--you can send the DVD's audio to a compatible audio/video receiver and a multichannel speaker system through a digital-audio interconnect (either optical or coaxial, not supplied). The unit also comes with an RF cable that will transmit DVD/VHS audio and video to your TV, a multilingual onscreen display (English, Spanish, French), and a multibrand TV/DVD/VCR remote control.
What's in the Box
DVD/VCR combo, remote control, remote batteries (two AA), user's manual, stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable, coaxial video cable, and warranty information.

Sony Portable Mini-Disc Player/Recorder (MZR500PC) Review

Sony Portable Mini-Disc Player/Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this player for 2 weeks now and I am very happy with it. When you opoend the box you get - One sony MZR500PC mini disk player. It has a metalic blue aluminum top, and a dark clear blue plastic bottom. The plastic is very tough, and won't break. Also you get a whimpy 3 inch 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm headphone jack cord (Standard size headphone jack), a pair of decent headphones - good bass reflex, but don't "bounce", a Instruction manuel and a PC link, which you just pop in to your USB port and windows wil do the rest, no cd reqiured - (Unless you dont have some drivers that are on the Win9x, Win Me, Win 2000 or XP. it IS compatible with Windows XP, theres a booklet on how to instal it on Windows XP. If you have WinAmp or another Mp3 player that alows you to create a play list, you can start it up and just let you MD player sit there recording. If you have the time you can title a song while its recording, which helps in finding the song you want to listen too. Whats really nice is the 35 to 40 hour playback on a SINGLE double a (AA) sized battery. Sony claims 48 hours, but if you stop the MD (MiniDisk) or any thing else that drains batteries, you get less time of play back. No AC adapter is included, but if you have rechargeable AA batteries you can use those. Battery lifes are as follows - play Back 30 - 40 hrs. Recording - 6 - 10 hours. The display on the unit has a volume meter spanning across the top, 5 point battery meter to the left, then track lenght, record time left or remaing track time is displayed (Changed from option menu), then there is a 6 character disply to the right (shows track names - MD title - Menus) There are not many buttons on this MD player, every thing from Bass Boost to record quality is done through menus. You press a botton and a menu will pop up - Edit, Bass, R-Mode (Record Mode) and so on. There is a Hold button o0n the back of the player (IF its turned on, when you press a button it won't do anything. Youd use this if you put it in your pocket. Its about 3 x 3 inches and less then am inch thick. Sound qualitys can be set for - Stereo (Full CD quality) Mono (Mono but still cd quality - Twice as long record) LP2 (Twice as long record + stereo, cant tell the diffrence) then theres LP4 (Four times as long record) which doesn't sound good. I don't know why they have this, some say its for lectures... but theres no microphone jack on this model. If you want one upgrade to the MZR700PC. Also theres no remote. And theres no space for a remote. Ill just clear up what jacks it HAS. 1 - Headphone2 - Optical In3 - Digital in (2 and 3 are in the same jack, its weird, but a optical cord goes through the jack to another jack because its like a half inch long plug. Phew, long sentence.) and finally it has a 3 Volt DC in plug. One thing i thought was funny is I live in Maryland, which is called MD. Get it? (Forced laughs)
All in all this is a great Mini Disk player AND recorder. Very small, well built and conserves power well.

This is the perfect product for those of you looking for a portablerecordable audio player but are shocked at the high prices and low memorysize of MP3 players. With the new USB to digital optical products out onthe market, it has become very easy to digitally transfer your MP3's tominidisc at a low-cost, without having to worry about a loss of quality. The Sharp also has a great analog sound as well.
Although I havegraduated to the much higher cost Sony MD-90, this was my first, and totell you the truth they perform almost as well.
The final reason fofpurchasing this machine over an MP3 player is that for the price of 1 SonyMagicGate 64MB Memory Card (holding an hour of music), you can get 60Multi-recordable Minidiscs (holding close to 70 hours of music)Need I saymore?
