I just purchased the Toshiba SD-P2500 DVD player. We immediately took it with us on a four hour flight and all I can say is, what a perfect investment. It kept my two kids (1.5 & 3.5 yrs old) occupied which, allowed my wife and I to travel almost stress free (she still had to put up with me).My 1.5 yr old wouldn't wear the headphones and the player's speakers worked just fine.NOTE: I like that the speakers are now located on the sides of the screen as opposed to their old location under the screen.
The only con, the player is a little bulky and barely fits in my Targus case along with it's accessories. As a matter of fact, some accessories had to be left behind.I knew this when I purchased it however and opted for the larger 8.9" screen instead of a more compact player.I prefer the larger screen when I watch it by myself and more so when 2 or 3 of us are watching it at a time. The picture was very clear once you find the right viewing angle.Just a heads up if someone is looking for something more compact vs a larger screen.
...
Now we just need to find a carrying case that can hold the player, battery, dvd's, cables, car adapter, two sets of headphones and an occasional diaper or two-ha....

Product Description:
Toshiba's SD-P2500 DVD-Video/DVD-Audio player is designed to deliver "no compromise" video and audio performance--for travel or for home theater. The company's second-generation DVD-Audio-equipped portable is distinguished by an 8.9-inch PolySilicon widescreen display whose high-resolution (1,024 x 600 pixel) image is far denser than its closest competitor. The TFT (thin-film-transistor) active-matrix display delivers film-like images rich in detail, color resolution, and contrast.
Besides media versatility (including DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-R, MP3/WMA CD, and a host of image formats), the unit offers Toshiba's upgraded Super ColorStream PRO progressive-scan component-video outputs (for use with high-definition and HD-ready TVs) and employs an 10-bit, 54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter to cement the guarantee of stellar image quality. Surface-mounted keypads grant "remote-free" operation of all essential functions, while a sleek, credit-card-sized remote control performs advanced operations.
Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SD-P2500 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The SD-P2500 also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.
Toshiba's Digital Photo Viewer displays images right on a television in a variety of popular formats, including Konica, Fuji Photo, Kodak Photo CD, as well as standard JPEG files--there's even a Secure Digital card slot to further simplify media viewing. An onscreen display walks you through the process of making a slideshows, in which you can preset the viewing time of each slide as well as zoom, rotate, and pan each photo.
Leading-edge 24-bit/192 kHz digital-analog converters from Analog Devices delivers exceptional two-channel DVD-Audio frequency response and dynamic range. DVD-Audio discs deliver high-resolution audio, capturing and reproducing all of the nuances of the original performance and offering high-resolution surround sound as well as stereo. Two built-in headphone jacks let you watch or listen with a partner. Dialogue Expansion improves intelligibility of a disc's center-channel frequencies, while Spatializer N-2-2 ULTRA and Natural Headphone virtual surround sound algorithms simulate surround through two speakers or headphones. Built-in stereo speakers grant headphone-free listening.
The supplied Lithium Ion battery blends seamlessly with the player's cosmetic profile and offers more than three hours of uninterrupted movie or music entertainment. During compact disc and DVD-Audio playback, the SD-P2500's LCD panel can be turned off, extending battery life even further. The SD-P2500 passes both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals through its coaxial-type digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

Toshiba HD-A30 1080p HD DVD Player Review

Toshiba HD-A30 1080p HD DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I didn't buy this from Amazon, but since reviews of the player are scarce, I thought I'd share some thoughts.

A few short months ago I bought the Xbox add-on to try the HD-DVD waters, and have been nothing but impressed, so when my standard DVD player died (my 7th one in 8 years, I'm a very heavy DVD watcher), I decided to invest in a player that will (hopefully) last (I also purchased a 4 year warranty this time).

The player itself is beautiful, both in appearance and on screen (watching on 1080p Samsung LCD). Picture quality of HD-DVD is, as expected, superb, and DVD upscaling is the best I have ever seen (easily destroying my 1 year old Sony).

A very few negatives. Boot times are still a bit slow, it takes about 40 seconds before the HD-DVD logo appears on screen, with another 20 seconds to load the disc, it's around 60 seconds total from power on to actually start watching the disc. Discs also don't resume play, which is odd as it seems to be a feature. If you don't power off the unit and stop a disc, it will resume where you left off, but if you power off the player, it restarts from the beginning, very odd, but Toshiba could easily fix in a firmware update.

All in all I am very, very pleased, the unit feels sold, looks amazing on your shelf and features some of the best video quality I have ever seen. The few, "problems" don't really bother me, but I wanted to mention them as it could turn off some people. Thanks for reading!

Sony BWU200S DVD+/-RW Blu-ray Disc Serial ATA (SATA) Drive Review

I traded a good working Lite-On Blu-ray burner for this one because it can record 4x (with the right media) and can burn dual layer (with the right media). I archive video clips to Blu-ray disc and this burner is the hub of my archive workflow, so speed and capacity are important. So far the Sony 200S works great. The only annoying thing was having to download an updated software file from Sony in order to play commercial Blu-ray discs. Why didn't Sony just include that software on the driver disc in the first place, like Lite-On did? My first attempt at the download didn't work until I contacted Sony for help (at least they have help). After the second attempt, the download worked fine and now plays commercial Blu-rays.

Product Description:
Sony's second generation Blu-ray Disc rewritable drive takes a giant leap forward in recording speed, now capable of 4X BD-R recording. BD-R/RW discs can store up to 50GB of video, music, or data on a single-sided disc and can be played back on Blu-ray Disc compatible players and drives. Also markedly improved is DVD recording speeds, now up to 16X for DVD+R discs. The BWU-200S supports virtually all BD/DVD/CD formats, so it eliminates the need to have multiple drives in a system. The internal drive sports a Serial ATA interface (SATA) for easy installation and includes a complete software bundle from CyberLink for recording and playing Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, and CDs too. Sony DCR-DVD308 1MP DVD Handycam Camcorder with 25x Optical Zoom Review

Sony DCR-DVD308 1MP DVD Handycam Camcorder with 25x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tickets to Disneyland are expensive, sufficiently so that when my wife decided that I should record the memories in moving pictures rather than stills, the price of the camcorder was almost certain to be unimportant. If recording the Disney experience would cost me less than the Disney experience itself, then the camera could be relegated to the "acceptable collateral damage" column of my planned budget.

The price of this camcorder isn't bad, but I've decided that camcorder pricing in general is a dishonest racket. The battery that comes with this camcorder is good for less than an hour of recording. When you're going to Disneyland, 45 minutes just isn't enough. You need to buy a bigger battery (I went with the biggest, 10 hours), and for that you'll pay almost a third of the price of this camcorder (less on Amazon, but I didn't have the luxury of waiting the several weeks they said it would take to get the battery). You need to buy a camera case. You need to buy a battery charger. You need to buy at least six DVDs (that gives you a bit under three hours of standard recording time). By the time I bought the stuff I needed to go with the camcorder, I'd spent about half the price of the camcorder itself. Plan to spend at least $200 more than the price of the camcorder on accessories if you want to take it on vacation with you. The collateral damage to your budget will always be greater than the price of the camera.

That said, this camcorder performed very well. It's very easy to use, and with a little practice I learned to record events one-handed while watching said events unfold in front of my eyes, not just on the screen. That is, once I got the camera going I could occasionally start watching my kids and stop watching the camcorder screen. Score a big one for the stabilization feature. The menus on the screen are easy to navigate, and the screen responds nicely to touch. I didn't have to push too hard, and it didn't respond to the passing of my finger over one button on its way to another.

The image quality is very nice. The zoom feature works very smoothly, and 25X optical zoom is more than enough to catch your kids' expressions of horror and delight when they're on a ride and your feet are planted on blessedly solid ground. And if you have to ride with them, well, I've nauseated friends and family with my clip of scenery zooming by while my kids made our tea-cup spin as fast as the mechanism would allow. I filmed at standard quality, and it shows nicely on a 32" HD TV. It looks grainy on a 42" screen.

The autofocus works pretty well when the lens isn't zoomed. I used it at full zoom in a large auditorium when my son's kindergarten class sang last month. I was seated about 150 feet back and the auditorium was dark. He kept going in and out of focus. I pulled back the zoom and the focus settled down. The sound was good, but I was bothered to hear my own whispers to my wife when I played back the video. I'd prefer that the microphone give more prominence to sound in front of the camera and less to sound that's in back.

If I had it to do over again, I'd probably buy a hard-drive camcorder rather than a mini-DVD camcorder. The DVDs are just more stuff you have to carry around in your bag, and the odds are you'll have to change the DVD at an inopportune time (e.g., right when your daugther is discovering just how long and wet a giraffe's tongue is). If, like me, you're a Mac owner, you'll find that Sony camcorders work pretty well with iDVD and iMovie. But my four-year old iMac doesn't support this camcorder. Newer ones do (we're upgrading, so no big deal for us). The video software that comes with the camcorder is only for Windows; it will only support still photos on Mac.

(An update on the above: No, new Macs do NOT support this camcorder. To download video to iMovie requires either that your camcorder have a firewire port or that it produce files in MPEG4 format. This camcorder has no firewire port and records in MPEG2. The fix that I've found is a program (e.g., Popcorn2) that will convert MPEG2 to MPEG4. It's not elegant and is mighty annoying, but it gets the job done. If you're a Mac owner, life will be simpler with another camcorder.)

On balance I like this camcorder. I'd like it more if it came with a bigger battery, a battery charger (you can charge a battery in the camera, but it takes a lot longer), and Mac compatible software. And if that touch-screen had a finish that weren't so easy to smudge.

Lite-On LVC-9016G DVD + VHS Combo Recorder (Silver) Review

Lite-On LVC-9016G DVD + VHS Combo Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Had high expectations on this Lite-On LVC-9016 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo. I've used plenty of Lite-On DVD/RW drives for various computers with absolutely no problems whatsoever, so I was expecting to have a good experience with the VHS->DVD recorder feature. Coupled with the fact that it had a built-in firewire socket in it for ease of transferring digital video from a camcorder to the unit for editing / recording, I was sold. Lots of good features came with the unit (one-touch DVD->VHS or VHS->DVD recording, easy setup-menu, ability to record to DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW), though the remote isn't the most user-friendly remote that I've used (text is hard to read).

Before I could even try the recording features on this unit, I already had one severe functional problem: the unit would freeze unexpectantly while on tuner mode. The unit would be on a TV channel, and a few minutes later, the screen would turn blank, audio would be cut off, and the unit would become unresponsive to any user input from the remote or the buttons on the unit itself. The only way to get the system to power down would be to press the "Power" button on the remote. (The "power" button on the unit does nothing to remedy this situation, which I found to be really odd). I tried to look on their website for any information regarding this problem, but none is available. I did try updating the firmware on this unit with what was on their website. Though updating the firmware was a breeze, the problem still remained, so I think it might be other software-related issues with the unit. I'm not sure whether this is an isolated incident, but after reading some of the reviews for the previous model (LVC-9006), I will most likely be returning this defective unit for a full refund and be looking at purchasing a combo unit from another manufacturer.

Always a tricky one when reviewing something which sounds great, but doesnt really do what it says on the tin.

I read a few reviews on the Phillips sound bar and decide to go for it rather than the Yahama, due to its inclusion of an upscaling DVD player being built in.

My house just doesnt lend itself well to placing 5 speakers, particularly rears, so I thought what the heck I'll try this.

The audio quality is excellent, deep bass (not quite sharp enough with movies on normal settings but that can be fixed by tweaking the audion settings and cranking the treble)and a huge array of different pre set movie and audio settings to suit your ear.

But as far as virtual Surround Sound capability goes...there isnt any as far as I can tell. I've tried various DVD's with scenes I know bring in the rear speakers on full systems and there is no distinguishable surround effect.

Disappointing really, although I have to say I still love the overall sound when its cranked up, it really booms out.

So if you want a boost to your TV sound and have a beautiful looking sound bar with built in DVD (and it does look awesome), you cant go far wrong. But if you are thinking you can change the laws of physics and have surround sound without rear speakers, think again, cause this just doesnt work!

Sometimes the quest for home surround sound is as ignominious as seeking the holy grail. Where do you place all those speakers? Do you have to reshape the room? Philips engineers have tackled that problem. They've managed to take the output from 5 distinct channel amplifiers and placed them in a single speaker called a Soundbar. Sony Handycam DCRDVD850 DVD Hybrid Camcorder with 60X Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

This Handycam has everything needed to be the most versatile of all of Sony's models with up-to-the-minute technology.

I originally hesitated because this only has an internal flash memory of 16 GB.However, I have a few of the sony memory sticks (4GB) Sony MSMT4G 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo (Mark2) Mediaand having them as an option allows me to record as much time on this unit as I could usually want. It is true that with the internal flash memory your recording time is restricted to about 11 hours. However, each 4GB of memory stick prolongs that limit by about 3.5 hours and supplements the internal flash memory.

I find the flash medium (and the memory sticks) to be preferrable to an internal hard drive (which can store 60 GB, but, are subject to mechanical failure).Although the hard drives will store 60GB, I rarely have that much to accumulate in digital footage before I dump it to my notebook, or, an external USB hard drive.11 hours of storage is about perfect for a day of interviews and miscellaneous recording.

This unit is a very nice, attractive, two-tone gunmetal and silver finish. It is slightly larger than the (very compact) DCR 47-87 series.Sony DCR-SR47 Hard Disk Drive Handycam? Camcorder (Silver)However, it will still almost fit in the palm of your hand.

The images are sharp quality, indoors or out.It is true (for a change) that the unit allows for one-button record to DVD.You can just slip a mini DVD (3") in the unit by lifting the cover and placing the DVD in the unit. This will burn about an hour to the 3" DVD so you can share it immediately. You need to use Sony's proprietary 3" disc Sony 3" Rewritable DVD+RW for Camcorders - 3pk but they are reasonably priced and reasonably available. The advantage of the searchable .mpg2 CODEC on disc should be obvious (as opposed to DV tapes).

If you need larger DVD burns, with the USB connection, it is possible to burn DVD's on the spot (I use this for interviews) for copies and distribution from your notebook computer. In addition, the internal file configuration can be converted to .wma or .mpg using Sony's proprietary software (included).(You will need to download the software updates to be able to edit the files using, for instance, Vista movie maker or other OS based video editing programs). The CODEC format is .mpg2 (not very efficient, but, allows for high resolution and editability (with updates to Sony's sofware).

This unit is sturdy and made as well as any of the Sony handycams. The chassis is, in fact, a proven design that has been around the SONY marketplace for over five years.

Another very useful feature is the 5.1 surround sound microphone. When you want to accurately record both audio and visual, directional stereo mic's will often pickup background noise and hiss, but, little else other than sound (such as voices talking at the camera) aimed at the mic. With the surround sound, you pick up everyting omnidirectionally. This is not only useful for picking up the voice of the person making the recording (as well as the subject) but has many other uses as well. When video'ing nature, the omnidirectional mike tends to attenuate the background hiss from all directions, yet, still pickup the sounds of birds and other nature sounds.

The digital quality is excellent (680,000 pixels translates to almost (about 75%) HD), and, with proper care in setting up your shots (being careful to avoid reflected or (too much) polarized light) you can make professional recordings.

After reviewing all of the available options out there, I think this is the unit with the most reliable and versatile features that is on the market.

I bought this player 4 months ago when it was first released from Japan while on a trip to Asia. I did extensive researches prior to buying this player and I bought it for its value for money, performance, picture/soundquality and ease of use.
Now, I'm not a serious audiophille or do Iintend to spend huge amount of dollars to get those top of the range DVDplayer (ie. Onkyo, Yamaha, etc). I want something practical, which Ibelieve most of you do as well. And guess what?Surprise, surprise -- I'vegot so much more than what I bargained for.
The picture is superb, sharp and crisp on my 30 inch Loewe TV. Colour is bright and does not"bleed". Sound is excellent when connected to my Yamaha 795a andno audio-sync problems. In addition, the zoom function, built-in DD5.1,DTS(sounds better than DD!) and HDCD(remarkable audio quality) encoders,component-colourstream and S-video output, dual disc trays and virtual N2-2surround sound for those with a 2 speaker setup system made this unitcomplete with features. Mine has got two additional mic inputs for Karaokeand it's gold in colour but are of the same parts and build. It's easy tosetup and use as well. Having said this, find me a DVD player that is closein comparison in regards to price, performance and function.

Now, do bear in mind that my DVD is Region 5,and although it has been multi-zoned, it played Saving Private Ryan (DTS --Region 1), Haunting, US Marshalls, Deep Blue Sea (all DD -- Reg 1),Matrix,Mummy, Fifth Element, Tomorrow Never Dies(DD -- Reg 4), T2, True Lies (DD-- Reg 5) flawlessly without any lock-ups, freezes, pauses (except forchanging layers for dual-layered discs) or audio-sync problems.
Iguess it is unfortunate that some reviewers have problems with this player.Maybe you should examine your connections properly and call up Toshiba forassistance before jumping the gun about this unit?I have 2 otherrelatives who bought this unit from here (Reg 4) upon my recommedation andthey too did not have any problems with it.
Maybe I do agree with somereviewers that the remote is chunky but it serves its purpose very well.Besides, who buys a unit (VCR, amp, tv for that matter) for it's remoteanyway?Get a Universal remote and that should solve the problem.
Inconclusion, I would say this is an awesome purchase. It's definitely worthevery dollar spent on it. Have a read in those DVD magazines and you'llfind the SD-3109 unit get very good ratings and reviews from professionalaudiophilles. I would suggest you visit your local electrical outlet to seeit for yourself. Get it, you won't regret it!
Hope my contributionhelps.

Excellent HD cam at a low price,
- it's a SONY,
- the video quality is very very good, 1080i! FULL HD, crystal clear.
- the 5.1 channels mic records amazing sound.
- the menus are easy to use, if you dont get it: use the "easy" button, it sets up the cam and you're good to go.
- the photos are very good taken thanks to the "Steadyshot" feature and the integrated flash. You can take photos at any time during video recording.
- the "night shot" func. really works.
- it fits in your hand perfectly and it has a good weight, not too light nor heavy.
- transfers to PC are easy and fast. just connect the usb, it's software detects it and download the videos, once it's done you can watch the videos on Windows media player, if you have any issue doing so, just google: "ffdshow" and download this codecs pack, so your pc can play almost any kind video out there.
- If you have a PS3, just plug the memory stick and play the vids.
- The photos can be transferred without using the sony software just copy/paste.

Opportunity:
-The Slow motion feature could be better, you won't get good video quality using this function, it's helpful if you just need to observe something in slowmo but not if you want to make an artistic video or something like that. What i do is take the regular video on HD and slow it down with Windows Movie Maker ;P (You can speed it up too)

This a very good HD camcorder for the price; you can't go wrong with SONY.

Edit: here is the link to the actual codecs you may need to play the videos with Windows Media Player,

[...]

Just install them and you're good to go.

Sony DCR-DVD408 4MP DVD Handycam Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom Review

Sony DCR-DVD408 4MP DVD Handycam Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tried this camera during my recent visit to Seattle for Tulip festival. The recording quality is amazing. 5 channel recording is superb. I tried it in 16:9 and 4:3 fine mode with playback on HD Plasma TV. The quality was breathtakingly good. Yet to try photo (claimed to take 4 MP pictures) as photos can only be taken with a memory stick.

Cons:
-Limited Mini DVD space (20 minutes max in fine mode).
-Limited support for combining mini DVDs to a regular sized DVD. Bundled software requires double the size of DVD (9GB) free on the PC to make a movie
-Box contains just the camcorder without any memory stick or DVD. It has to be separately ordered.

Sony CFD-ZW755 Portable CD / Cassette / Radio Boombox with Detachable Speakers Review

Sony CFD-ZW755 Portable CD / Cassette / Radio Boombox with Detachable Speakers

I like to play music -- mostly classical -- at my desk at work. This past week the volume control on my old Sony boombox broke (after nearly ten years of daily use) so I went out looking for a replacement. I was pleasantly surprised at the low prices of most of the units I saw, but they sounded rather tinny compared to the good sound I was used to from my old Sony. At the end of the shelf I found this model. When I inserted the CD which I had brought with me for auditioning, I immediately heard a clear improvement in sound over the less expensive models. In fact, the sound was even better than that of my old Sony with which I had been thoroughly pleased. I bought this model on the spot and the next day installed it next to my desk at work. It's very convenient too use, looks nice (compared to most current boomboxes) and sounds great. Sure it cost a few dollars more than the inferior-sounding units but(...) I'd say it's a great buy.
Incidentally, although I listen almost exclusively to CDs, this unit has two tape drives, which allow for tape dubbing (which a lot of cheaper models don't) as well as a digitally tuned AM/FM radio. Also the CD player has 1-bit conversion -- like the best CD players, but unlike most boomboxes -- which contributes to the better sound. As I said, it's a great buy.

Product Description:
The CFD-ZW755 CD/radio cassette recorder sports a convenient handle so your tunes can go anywhere you do, whether you're blasting tunes for friends or listening in private through the supplied stereo headphones. The unit's CD player uses a one-bit digital-to-analog audio converter for pristine sound, and audio CD-R/CD-RW compatibility means the box will play your home-brewed music mixes as well as prerecorded CDs.
The CFD-ZW755 includes a digital AM/FM stereo tuner, too. Four electronic sound modes (rock/pop/jazz/vocal) let you tailor the sound for listening to various different types of music or in different environments, while Mega Bass sound enhances low-frequencies in any sound mode. Perfect for parties, the unit comes with Sony's Loop/Flash sound effects. Loop continuously repeat a few seconds of music, while Flash provides intermittent playback for a DJ-like stuttering effect.
With synchronized CD/cassette dubbing, CD playback commences just after cassette recording begins. The stereo record/playback cassette deck provides direct recording from either the tuner, the CD player, or another cassette. Other features include four-inch detachable speakers and 20-track CD programming. The unit runs on the supplied AC power cord or six D batteries.

This Panasonic DVD player is made in Japan, and comes with a plethora ofuseful features; cinema video setting, dialogue enhancer,"resume" function (will resume movie from where it was left offeven after powering off the unit), DTS and DD output (you still need areceiver with the decoder) and excellent image quality.
It plays all ofthe major DVD titles including problem discs such as "the Matrix withoutstanding picture quality and sound. I liked that this unit did notdisplay the annoying layer change delay common in other models. It wasseamless
On the down side, there was no Chapter access from the remote. What I mean is that I was unable to access the Chapters directly via thenumeric pad. I think the only way to access the Chapter directly (say fromChapter 1 to Chapter 18) is by pressing the display button first, thenpressing the fast forward button once to C, and then enter the Chapternumber via the numeric pad. This is very cumbersome.
The remote couldalso be larger and backlit.
Overall, the image and soud quality areexcellent and the player performs well with any DVD. It dous not earn fivestars because of the faulty chapter access feature and the remote - butthese may be flaws many users will not mind at all.
Hope this helps.

Sony HDR-SR5 AVCHD 4MP 40GB High Definition Hard Disk Drive Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom Review

Sony HDR-SR5 AVCHD 4MP 40GB High Definition Hard Disk Drive Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using this camera for almost 3 months now. I really like the quality for the most part and having the video go directly to a digitized format is awesome. However, I do have some serious problems with a few things.

1. No USB connection on the camera body.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, I really don't understand why they didn't add a port as important as the one for the USB connection directly on the camera body. That is basically the only way for you to transfer the video files directly to your computer. It seems like either of the ports for the A/V Out or theComponent connection (which I hardly use) could have been left to the base if it was a space issue, or perhaps even the mini-HDMI port (which I think they should have included an adapter to standard HDMI for).

If they HAD included the USB port on the camera body, there wouldn't be a need for the base at all. The more I think about it, the more nonsensical it seems. Of course, perhaps there was some engineering issue that made it more feasible....but for $700 bucks, I don't want to have to make excuses for them or figure out why they made something more complicated when it could have been so simple.

Also, although the newer versions USB seem to be overtaking firewire, they could have put that type of connection on the base rather than additional component and A/V ports which are already on the camera body.

2. Shooting in low light has lots of noise.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought the CMOS sensor on this camera was supposed to eliminate noise in low light situations, but from what I can tell, shooting outside at night or even in dark rooms, there's plenty of noticeable noise in the dark regions of the video image, even when shooting at the highest quality level, HD XP. I don't know if it's something I can have checked out, perhaps my sensor just isn't working properly, but in any case, that's been somewhat of a disappointment for me.

What I expected was video quality like that in the movie Collateral, which had lots of great night shots using HD cameras. Maybe that is a bit too much for a consumer camera, but still, I expected more.

Also, another problem that I've found with night shots, is that the auto-focus has a really hard time getting zeroed in on the right area. I usually have to end up focusing it manually if I want a consistently clear shot at night.

3. The bundled software doesn't convert to an uncompressed format.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Since AVCHD is a relatively new format, I was certain that they would have a feature in the software to convert clips to some more universal uncompressed format. But the software that comes with the camera only has the option to export the video to MPEG2, which creates a clear loss in quality. So, I don't understand why they wouldn't make it easier for us to convert the video into some more widely used format with that losing that HD clarity. I know there are third party applications that do this, but Sony should have provided this feature with the camera.

Additionally, working with the AVCHD format is a pain in general. In order to view the video on your computer as a video file, you have to import it using the Sony Picture Utility software that comes on a CD-ROM with the camera. When it imports the files to a selected destination folder, you actually get 3 files for every video clip you've shot. The extensions are 'm2tsm', 'modd', and 'moff'. The 'm2tsm' file is the one that actually contains the video data (I had to assume since it's always the largest). I'm not sure what the others are for.

Even after you've installed all the provided software, you can't just double click a video file to open it. You have to "Register" the folder the video files are in in the Picture Motion Browser. Only then can you view your video. They have a program called 'Player for AVCHD', beut it stupidly only plays the video on your camera harddrive, and doesn't even have an option to directly open the files on your computer. Personally, I've found the software to be more cumbersome than useful. The program doesn't have an option to move folders, so if you do move the files, you have to re-register them and delete the old folders from the Picture Motion Browser yourself. While it's nice in someways to keep things organized, it's not really that helpful. And the editing features made available are almost completely worthless, unless all you want to do is split a clip in two.Despite it's shortcomings, I still think it's a decent camera, although I really wish they had better software with more editing features. Still, I think it's worth $700 or so for the clear image (in daylight) and the convienice of having the video go directly to a harddrive. Despite it's shortcomings, this might actually be the best HD harddrive camcorders on the market, but having not had the opportunity to try any others, I can't say that for sure. What I can say is that it's good, even if it's not perfect.

*I had to edit this because I kept thinking of other things I had problems with. And the more I thought about the file format situation, the more annoyed I became. So I think I would have to modify my recommendation and say that you should just wait until future versions to buy this camera when they improve the software or just try out another camera altogether. Considering these other difficulties, I think I would have to drop my rating to a 2 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this unit to replace a Kenwood KDC-MP425 which served me well, but ultimately stopped ejecting CD's. Anyway while this one doesn't have the flashy graphics of the Kenwood unit it certainly outperforms it in function.

This unit let's you fast forward and rewind through MP3 CD's quickly. ID3 tags are read and the Aux input will be useful for when my friends with Ipods.Sound quality is very good, however I did not realize until installing that this unit only has one set of RCA outputs if you're going to hook it up to a four channel amp. The remote is a nice little bonus, as I had to buy my last one separately.

It was this or a unit with GPS built in for $200 more. I'm glad I went with this one and held onto my money during these tough economic times.
