Memorex MD 74 Mini Disc (5-Pack) Review

Memorex MD 74 Mini Disc
Average Reviews:

This is a very good deal, especially for people just starting recording on MD. Memorex were the first I bought with my player, and the quality is great and very reasonable in price (once I bought a 5-pack on clearance for 6.90!). Each disc comes in a slip case (save them they come in handy!), and has labels for the case, spine, and disc. Nothing fancy but it serves it's purpose. You have to write kind of small for each label also. No cool colors either, just grey, but this is still a really good buy. Keep buying from Memorex!

Verbatim 4.7 GB 8x DigitalMovie DVD-R Spindle (25 Discs) Review

Verbatim 4.7 GB 8x DigitalMovie DVD-R Spindle
Average Reviews:

I have use Memorex, Fuji, and TDK's DVD-r and they are all made from the same materials.Sony has a nicer pearl surface, but Verbatim Digital Movie DVD-r is the "king." This version is the best looking and use Verbatim's Datalife Plus technology: "Metal Azo recording dye" for longer lasting.Since I have yet encountered any burn failure with any DVD-r like with CD-r, how long the DVD-r will last is the question. The quality top surface materials have what look like some vinyl and silver spray on to resemble the old Hollywood's film record/tape.

It is listed as 4x speeds but I can get 8x write speed on my LaCie's 16x d2 DVD

I use the Denon unit to up-convert older DVD's for play on a 60" SONY HDTV.It does a great job, better than the up-convert function of the SAMSUNG bluray player (which is also quite good). The picture quality is not as good as the true HD when playing a Bluray disc, but the differances are subtle and my investment in the older discs is preserved.I have been told that this unit is the "standard" and I can see why.

I was looking for a new hi-tech look for my modern dining room. Most good looking units were $399 and up.I visited Scott's website - they look like they turn out quality products - so I decided to give the 3D vertical audio a try.Good decision! In addition to beina g a very attractive solid unit, it produces excellent sound. The glass doors enclosing the discs work noiselessly, and the audio produced, using a 4 option tone control, is excllent.Buy one - you won't be disappointed.

Product Description:
Dressed to impress but rich in features and healthy in sound, H.H. Scott's three-CD SMV300 stereo system is truly unique in not only appearance but construction. The CD changer employs three independent CD drives configured in a vertical array. The fact that the drives operate independently--with separate servo mechanisms and separate lasers--lets it switch between discs quickly, rather than having to first stop playback on the first disc, load a new disc, and then find and play the first track from the next disc, as most carousel changers operate.
The system's stylish, motorized door is designed to slide smoothly open with the press of a button from the remote or from the system's front panel. Even better, however, is a cool palm sensor that will open the door as soon as it senses your hand moving toward the door.
Playback options include repeat (one track, one disc, or all discs), random play, 40-track memory sequencing, and intro scan (which plays the first 10 seconds of each track to help you find the one you want). Drift off to sleep using the handy sleep timer, and/or set the system's alarm clock to wake you up to your favorite radio station or a motivating CD.
Three defeatable preset equalizer settings (rock, pop, and classic) let you tailor the sound to your taste, your program, or your room. A stereo analog (left/right RCA) auxiliary input lets you hook up a second source such as a cassette deck, minidisc player/recorder, or MP3 player, and a choice of stereo analog and digital (Toslink optical) outputs facilitates connection with a CD recorder, MD recorder, or cassette deck.
What's in the Box

SONY VRD-VC10 DVDirect External DVD Recorder Review

SONY VRD-VC10 DVDirect External DVD Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I didn't purchase this product at Amazon, but commonly rely on others' recommendations at this site, so here's my take.THIS PRODUCT IS A GREAT INVESTMENT.The primary reason that I didn't give it a 5 star rating, is because the packaging doesn't clearly state which brands of blank DVD's are compatible.I bought a 100 pack of memorex DVD+R & the disks wouldn't finalize.I contacted sony support & learned that there's a list of approved brands.

DVD+R DL (Double Layer)
Verbatim/Mitsubishi 2.4x speed

DVD+R
Sony 4x & 8x
Ricoh 8x
Verbatim/Mitsubishi 4x & 8x
Taiyo Yuden Co. 4x & 8x
Hitachi Maxell 8x

DVD+RW
Sony 4x
Ricoh 4x

(The support person also said TDK works - but it wasn't on the list)"The list" goes on for other types of Media (ie. DVD-R etc.) Visit sony.storagesupport.com for more info.
I have used only Sony disks without difficulty.

Note: the Double Layer disks are priced about 10 times the single layer disks, so you'd better have a good reason to use that feature.

Also, if you have an older DVD player, be aware that some will not read/play burned DVDs.I've lived this problem. It's frustrating, but I found a new, very inexpensive DVD player that works well.

One drawback... using the stand-alone option with a Digital Video Camera requires the signal to be converted to analog, then back to digital & there's certain to be loss of picture resolution -whether it's noticable may be a matter of opinion.Fortunately, you can hook up your Digital Video Camera to your computer via firewire and utilize the Video Capture software by Nero, that I found to be very straightforward. I recommend using the DVD+VR software feature that allows you to insert your latest video footage into a previously burned DVD+RW disk that works in most all newer DVD players.

I didn't commit to converting my old VHS to digital until I found an older VHS tape whose image quality had detiorated so much as to be useless. What a loss!I had been intimidated by peers who'd told me to plan on spending upwards of 10 hours to edit a single hour of finished tape. The standalone operation & the quality Nero software bundled with the software make this Sony product a less-intimidating, worthwhile investment.

Pioneer AVIC-Z1 - Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor and radio Review

Pioneer AVIC-Z1 - Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor and radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought thisunit here at Amazon.com, and then had it installed at a major appliance center. The major appliance center had free installation with the purchase of this unit, but I saved enough money buying it here at Amazon, to where I came out ahead by having to pay for the installation.

This unit made quite an impression on the technicians, who all said that they want to get one for their vehicle.

It fit PERFECTLY in my Ford F-150 double din.Looks great.

I have already paired my cell phone via bluetooth with the unit. You have to buy the accessory for the bluetooth, which is well worth the money. When I get a call, it turns down the music, and the caller id comes up on the screen. You then just answer. You also have a phonebook on the screen, which uploaded right from my blackberry. This accessory is a must.

I also got the iPOD adapter. This accessory is a HUGE MUST.It sounds absolutely unbelieveable. However, this is one of the few negative things I have to say.Although it does have a search function, it requires a lot of scrolling. Also, if you decide you don't want the song selected, it then reverts back to the beginning of the list, even if you were in the "n's", for example.Pioneer needs to make it easier to select groups and songs in the iPOD.Still, do not pass on the accessory.....the techs also loved it.I had them place the cord in the glovebox, which worked out very well.

As far as navigation, the display is beautiful. That extra half inch of display (this is 7" vs the tpical 6.5") makes a BIG impact.Navigation is easy, and there is a pleasant female voice to guide you on approaching turns.I have owned to Garmin GPSs, which are good products, but this is better because of the guages that pinpoint the approaching turn.

The voice commands are very cool, but I am just learning them now.It works well from what I have seen.

My 2005 Ford F-150 had an upgraded sound system with sub-woofer, and they were able to hook into this. The quality of music in changing to the Avic-Z1 just DOUBLED easily.I actually sat in my driveway last night listening to my iPOD, amazed at how clean the system sounded.Honestly, it sounds like I got a whole new high end speaker package. This unit is ready for either SIRIUS or XM, which I passed on because with 5000 songs in my iPOD, just don't feel like I need it.

The DVD picture is awesome, and with the newly improved sound, it is like being in a theater.

I had to take one star off just for the iPOD issues, and the fact that they need to improve the iPOD menu.Maybe they can do that via a software upgrade.I also had to give it only four stars because of their governors on the video and other functions. In order to watch video, the emergency brake has to be set.I am told there used to be a way around this, but now there is an internal gyroscope that is tough to bypass.Boooooo!!What if my passenger wants to watch video?I also have to set the brake to enter an address for navigation.I guess I can understand they don't want people inputting info when driving, but I wish it was not there.

I highly recommend this unit, and do not regret it at all.

Samsung DVD-1080P7 Up-Converting 1080p DVD Player Review

Samsung DVD-1080P7 Up-Converting 1080p DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have this unit plugged into a 55" Sony projection TV with an HDMI cable.

The up-converted picture is great; episodes of House are much sharper than with a progressive scan DVD player, Star Wars looks terrific, etc.No complaints on the picture quality at all.The unit is small and looks attractive. Some people have complained about a buggy firmware in these reviews, but I haven't noticed any bugs.

The best feature, besides the picture quality, is that you can turn off the unit while a DVD is playing, turn it back on later, and the player remembers where it was--no more pausing for hours or days (or dealing with the frustration of trying to "rewind" or "fast-forward" to where you were).

There are some drawbacks though. The number one issue is that the player is slow to respond to the remote commands.Pressing "power" on the remote takes a few seconds to turn off, and so I often press it again--which eventually turns the player back on.Menu, play, pause, etc. also lag just enough to make me wonder if the player got the command or not.

This wouldn't be so bad, except the remote/player combination is finicky about the angle of the remote to send a command successfully.I find I have to hold the remote at just the right angle (not directly pointing at the player!) for it to work.I guess the idea is that users want to hold the remote so that they can read the buttons, not aiming it at the player--neat, but I am using to aiming. This is extremely aggravating, so I am docking 2 stars for this.

Another annoyance is that when the player switches between layers on the DVD, there is a huge and obvious glitch in the video playback. My ancient JVC player didn't do this, nor have I seen this on el cheapo Zenith players.

But this player is cheap, small, and is a good value for passing the time until the HD-DVD/BluRay thing is resolved.

Toshiba SD4100 Progressive Scan DVD Player Review

Toshiba SD4100 Progressive Scan DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unfortunately, this product has flaws that can not be overlooked, and I returned the next day.

1. There is no position memory for DVD stopping, to return to your last spot of viewing, once the disc is removed. In fact, after 22 minutes in the stop mode, the player shuts down and you lose the disc position. When watching shows over several days this is a must.

2. There are several view modes to resize the screen picture, but none of them work on my widescreen TV, with this player. The 1.33:1 all stretch and fill the screen. The older 2.35:1 that are not formatted to fit the screen all remain narrow and can not be expanded or zoomed.I tried the same discs in my older Panasonic DVD player and I was able to fill the screen, shrink, etc.I tried every combination available and many discs.I use the view mode quite a bit for older TV shows and concerts on DVD.

3. The remote response is lacking and it is very small. It needs to be pointed at the player straight on. My other equipment allows remote use from any angle and even off the back wall.

I realize this is a low priced player, but the most useful options are not there or flawed. The picture quality and sound through my monster cables were quite good, but did not compensate for the flaws.

Hope this helps.j.

These CDs are are manufactured for stand-alone CD Recorders not for CD "burners" in computers. The stand-alone units will not accept computer discs, but computers will accept both. The CD-R Music (or audio) cost more because they are taxed by the RIAA to compensate artists for piracy. Computer discs do not have that tax, and are therefore cheaper. The quality of the discs differs from brand to brand, and results vary from brand to brand and CD Player to CD Player. I would not buy these CDs for a computer burner, it's not as cost effective as other CDs for computers. I do, however, reccomend the Memorex CD-Rs with the white labels over other brands. These seem to have fewer problems in car CD players and older cd players.

Audiovox D1718PK 7-Inch Portable DVD Player with Bonus Headphones and Car Kit Review

Audiovox D1718PK 7 inch Portable DVD Player with Bonus Headphones and Car Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After having this product for just a few days, here are some first impressions of my first portable DVD player. The screen resolution is not as good as I would have hoped, but it is good enough. Scenes with a lot of small detail may disappoint, but when larger less complex images are viewed, the detail is amazingly good. The built-in speakers are a little tinny, but again, good enough. On the other hand, the headphone sound is very good indeed. My new fully-charged battery lasted 2 hours 40 minutes, not the 3 hours suggested, but we are all familiar with overly optimistic battery life claims!

The real reason to buy this unit is the portability factor, which allows it to be used in the car, and the two sets of headphones should keep two children relatively calm on car trips. But the folding headphones may be a challenge and so kids and adults alike should be informed of their fragile nature. Speaking of fragile, the disc door is thin plastic, and may break if closed roughly or mishandled. A sturdier door would be a good idea.

I had hoped this unit would be an upgraded model of the D1708PK, but it appears the only difference is that this model sports a black case. It looks really sharp though. When handled with care, this product should give long service, and anyone looking for a DVD player for use in a vehicle should give it consideration. The bonus pack with the two sets of headphones, the adapters, cables, remote, etc., make it a no-brainer.

I just bought this today and had 5 minutes to learn how to use it for my daughter's Chorus concert. It is unbelievable! It is very easy to use, and takes great video even with the wierd dark amature lighting of a school concert. This is my first digital camcorder. My old VHS-C was just too bulky that I tended not to take it anywhere or use it.This is very small, and there is no hassle with tapes.Simply pop in a mini DVD and you are done! The picture quality is incredible. My old camera would have never been able to capture the video in low light like this camera.I was having a tough time deciding between this and the Sony 405.With about a $200 price difference, all forums, literature etc.said the only difference between the two was the 505 has a better still camera built in (which I didn't care about).THIS IS NOT TRUE.The bigger 3.5 Vs. 2.7 LCD screen makes all the difference in the world.Since that's what you are looking at 99% of the time while you are shooting, that would have been enough for me to by the 505.Also, this camera comes with software which allows you to transfer your old videos on to DVD's.The only thing I did not realize about this camera before I bought it that I do not like is the fact that you cannot adjust the recording time of SHQ, HQ and Low Quality to allow for more time on the DVD when you are recording it.Sony basically has an optimizer or something like that to automatically adjust time for the best picture quality.I got 27 minutes on the DVD.An extra 2 minutes would have allowed me to tape the whole program.30 minutes goes awfully fast when recording because this camera is so easy to use.I can see I'm going to pay a fortune for disks. However, overall, I would not consider another camera.I can't wait to take my time and really learn how to use this baby.

Sony HDR-UX5 4MP AVCHD DVD High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

The combination of ClearVid CMOS and x.v. Color standard makes the difference. Supposed to capture 1.8X colors more than the human eye can recognize and i agree with that. Your LCD with HDMI will blow your eyes (component is nice too). I never tought my TV can display those colors, clear, crispy, vivid, you got to see it to believe it.

You can capture still images at 4MP even while you're recording (you need a MStick Duo). The pics are ok but doesn't replace a semipro digital camera. But let me tell you that you can leave your digital camera at home.

Your home movies will be flavored with dolby digital audio, so if you have a home teather you will see your friends in the scene while you're hearing sounds from other directions.

Slow motion mode lets you capture up to 240 fps for just 3 seconds, that's a 12 seconds sequence with no lost frames at normal playback, interesting for sports or any fast move.

The only con is the AVCHD format, you will need a PS3 or Blue Ray player in order to play the Double Layer DVD but can use the camcorder as player. Anyways you can use standards mini DVDs.

Is a good deal, i think camcordes twice the price are not much better than this.

I received the camcorder a couple of days ago to replace my older Sony miniDV camcorder that is nine years old (still works well).I bought the new one after buying a Samsung 46" LCD flat screen and seening what I have been missing in HD television and it made the my existing camcorder look mediocre.I needed an HD camcorder to go with the HD display.

I have seen other photographers using hard drive camcorders with USB portsand decided then that I would go that for next purchase of a camcorder.I saw two advantages over the miniDV tape of the hard drive: (1)the ability to transfer the images onto a computer quickly (it is more than twice as fast as transferring a miniDV tape using firewire) and (2) the HD had 4 hours or more of operation without changing tapes.I film my son's sporting events that run two hours and changing tapes is always ackward.

I have used on trial basis a camcorder that had the small DVD burner built inside and it worked fine but the need for for having the camcorder operate on the charger for 15 minutes or more to "finalize" the disk was very annoying.I also worry about the miniDVD disks skipping during filming while using miniDVDcamcorders in high shake environments such as in the back of speedboat. The just seem intuitively more vibration prone, but I could be worried about nothing. Thus I chose the hard drive version over the miniDV tape and the miniDVD disk similiar camcorder that Sony sells.

Thus far the device has worked well and looks great on the HD large screen TV.I film my son's first football game in HD tommorrow.I had to go back to the store to buy the bigger QM71 battery. The battery the come with camcorder claims to work 90 minutes, but this goes by quickly. The QM71 battery lasts for more three hours.I amd considering also buying the QM91 battery but it very thick and takes up lots of space behind the camera.I like to have two batteries, one to charge and one to use.I also bought a travel charger for the camcorder that makes it possble to charge the battery at home while using the camcorder untethered with a second battery.

I read reports about some people no liking the touch screen and finding it confusing. This is a complicated and it is at time confusing but I like the touch screen.

The worst part of the camcorder is not the camera at all, the software is not up to the rest of the amazing capabilities of the rest of the gear.I use the camera with Windows XP and so I used the free sony software the came with the camera.THe camera puts out .m2ts files.I would guess that none of your current software recognizes this. Mine certainly did not and I have lots of different current software.Apparently .m2ts is the file extentions for the new AVC/H.264 the Sony and Panasonic (of VHS tape fame) are jointly trying to establish.I bought this camera because I this this new disk format with dominated the prosumer video space and many companies will sell slick software for it.

One surprise (it should not have been but I did think about it) was that the HD video images require much more computing horsepower to display than the prior generations of video.A 3 GHz Pentium 4 is the bare minimum toallow a PC to show the video images without jerkyness (Also the new Pentium DUOs work was well). If your current computer is a little old you can use the camcorer to play the videos on your flatscreen but this is not a long term solution. Is possible to fairly easily move videos back forth between the camcorder and your old computer using the USB port. The transfer speed is around 500 MB per minute so the entire 30GB may take an hour.I may a little optimistic on this transfer rate but it not way off.I have just done a few transfers thus far and never have I transfer the whole drive. The longest transfer was 20 minutes and this around 1/3 of a drive. This is much, much fast than the 120MB per minute that I have been getting using my miniDV tape drive on my old Sony camcorder. The radical increase in transfer speed is what I was looking for. While the now think of this as being awesome fast, it will not take more than a few weeks before I think that even this speed is painfully slow. That is why technology is, never enough.

The camera controls, zoom, etc are fairly conventional.Although the detail in the images is awesome since they are HD.I use the 10X optical zoom with a 2X digital zoom mode selected which give me plenty of zoom range. There is a 10X digital zoom range mode but the images are very pixelated at the extreme end of the zoom.

The camera is surprisingly small and compact, moreso than my old camcorder.

The sound is awesome (Dolby 5 channel surround sound).I never new how important sound was until four years ago when I got the surround sound for my DVD player.Have surround for football games and basketball game filming will put the crowd behind me and the field noises in front of me.I will learn more how works out in the future, but inital test show it is working as it seems it should.

The real test will come after using the camera couple of months and seeing all the difference in the new film results.I sure the camera will out well.I many have to buy a new computer or a new video card to using my computer as a player, but I still have some software changes to try.

I can burn traditonal DVDs or a new kind of HD DVDs (called AVCHDs).If I get a bluray burner I can make Bluray HD DVDs.Many options for playback.I store all of our currently family videos on a 750GB hard disk for which I have a USB 750GB drive for backup.I like this method of storing the video collection. Many Blurays or othe DVDs is not my first choice.I have seen dedicated HD video players that can operate through the ethernet. This another avenue to explore.Meanwhile I will use the camera as a video player and see if buy a new video card for my computer fixes my jerkiness with my 2.5 GHZ Pentium computer.

The best thing about the camera is the awesome look of the videos on the large flatscreen LCD display and the worst thing is the annoying software that comes for free with the camera (although it does 75% of what you want).

Memorex 9.4GB Double-Sided DVD-RAM (Single) Review

Memorex 9.4GB Double-Sided DVD-RAM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Some of the other reviews refer to DVD/R, DVD/RW or DVD+RW, which are all different, incompatible formats from DVD-RAM. I can only speak to my Memorex DVD-RAMexperience. I own over 40 DVD-RAM cartridges, mostly from Maxell, TDK & Panasonic. Only 2 have ever failed: this Memorex & a freebie from Optodisk. I thought I would try this Memorex because if it's [low] price. It failed within the first week of use, taking all 9.4 Gigs of data with it, and the defect was such that it could not even be reformatted.Getting a replacement under the warranty was so much trouble that it wasn't worth it. I've heard tell that that these Memorex DVD-RAMs don't play nicely with Macs. Buyer beware!

Philips DVDR985 Progressive-Scan DVD Recorder and Player Review

Philips DVDR985 Progressive-Scan DVD Recorder and Player
Average Reviews:

I just can't let the last review go by without comment, especially given some plain errors in fact.
>>On VHS input, it suffers from signal drop, skipping over dropped out audio and video.<<
Video tape is far from the archival medium of choice, what with the ease at which the tape or its metallic coating can be affected. The quality of the tape, and thus recording, will deteriorate over time even if obvious damage to the tape cannot be seen by the naked eye. Now, the Philips DVDR985 will skip over dropouts in audio and video - but the cut it makes is clean. I thus have a clean DVD copy of a videotape without having to watch all the defects and glitches in the original tape itself.
It would be wise to also ensure that your VCR is in good working order and its heads are clean. But no DVD recorder will be able to bring back video or audio that has become damaged over time.
I have recorded several hours from various VHS casettes with very fine results. You won't get a recording that looks like a DVD from a VHS source, but all but the most hard to please users will be more than satisfied.
>>Also, be aware that this unit while it will play some DVD recordable formats it doesn't write to, it WON'T play pressed DVD-ROM, e.g. the DVD movies you buy in a store! The video keeps skipping, with no audio.<<
... I have been playing all sorts of pre-recorded DVD Video discs,... and all play with remarkable sound and picture quality (of course your TV and sound system will affect performance, but saying it won't play DVD movies from a store is pure BS).
It's an excellent player, incorporating the Crystal Clear Pro Progressive-Scan system with a sophisticated Motion Adaptive System (DCDi chip by Faroudja). This is well known to produce superior results. I am far happier with it than my previous highly rated Panasonic RP91K player.
>>Also, DVD+R, the write once/read many (WORM) DVD disc format, is only just now coming out, and, the entire DVD+ format is more expensive than the traditional DVD- format used in most other recorders. The DVD+ format was made to capitalize on a market without standards yet, so, don't be pulled into it.<<
...Microsoft has just put its backing behind the DVD+RW format so I hardly think that issues of expense or standards will be issues for too much longer. I have already played DVD+RW discs recorded on the DVDR985 on a Panasonic portable, my HP DVD+RW drive, and a standard Pioneer DVD player all with impressive results. ...If there is any DVD standard I'd put money on, it is DVD+RW. ...
In addition, this player has an iLink firewire input missing from some other recorders so you can connect digital camcorders. You also get both optical and coaxial digital outputs for digital receivers.
To sum up, this is the player to get if you are looking for a DVD Recorder for your home entertainment system. Sure these units are ...[pricy], but most newer technology usually is. This is a great DVD recorder and a superb DVD player. By all means get this most highly recommended item if you can.

CD-RW Drive 4X/4X/6X USB Mobile CDRw with Ac/battery for Mac/pc Review

CD-RW Drive 4X/4X/6X USB Mobile CDRw with Ac/battery for Mac/pc
Average Reviews:

I needed a CD burner for my laptops, and a USB compatible one was a necessary choice. After a lot of reading and researching, I opted for the Digital Relay: most professional reviews were positive (...), but I was held back by some feedbacks by (...) users. So there was some suspense in the air when I installed it.
The results so far are very positive: software installation (on a thinkpad with win2000) was flawless, and burning audio and data a piece of cake. There is also a backup software utility. Both applications do their job well, although very advanced users will want something better: free/cheap recording software abounds both for Mac and Windows, so this is besides the point of this review. The fact that the digital relay duplicates as a stand-alone mp3 player is extremely useful if you listen to a lot of music; using a tape adapter you can play mp3 in your car -- very cool.
The only drawback is that this unit won't record in packet writing mode on win2000-based systems; the customer service warned me about it before I bought the unit. To me it doesn't make any difference, since I use it for data backup and music recording, not as hard drive substitute.
Another very minor drawback is the remote: it's cute and useful when driving a car. But it looks very fragile, and designed for the hands of a toddler. Something bigger and sturdier would have made for better engineering design.
