Panasonic DIGA DMR-EZ475VK - DVD recorder/ VCR combo - black Review

Panasonic DIGA DMR-EZ475VK - DVD recorder/ VCR combo - black

What makes this different from the DMR-EZ47V model? Only the inclusion of an HDMI cable. This is my third Panasonic DVD-type recorder and none of them have had major failings.

Don't believe the Amazon reports of a bad digital tuner as it just isn't true. The secret to good terrestrial digital reception is the right antenna. If you have that, you get great channels. Albeit, not in high def. But this is not a high def recorder. I didn't bother with the analog channels as I receive them all digitally, and then some.

I recommend the stand alone Phillips "Silver Sensor" antenna or clone.Don't waste money on the Terk models as they look nicer but don't do the job as well.Analog transmission is going away so you won't need rabbit ears. If the "Silver Sensor" doesn't work, you are just in a bad location. Mine works great through a 5-900 MHz 3-way splitter.

With my old GoVideo DVD/VCR combo I had 8 cables running from the back of the unit to the TV. 3 component cables & 2 audio. Plus 1 yellow composite and 2 more audio just to play VHS. 8 cables replaced by 1 (ONE) HDMI. Both formats play through HDMI.

With the HDMI upconversion turned on your DVD and VHS pictures can display at 480i/p, 720p, 1080i/p, or just select auto. While the difference in the picture is noticeable, especially with VHS, don't expect miracles. The best upconversion in the world can only simulate HD, it can't create information not in the original. For true HD movie experience we still need blu-ray. I have one and it is awesome.

If the HDMI on your TV supports Viera the Panasonic remote control can control limited functions of your TV. No more manual programming of the remote to work with your TV! The smart features means your player will automatically turn off when you turn the TV off. However, my Vizio doesn't support Viera so it doesn't work via HDMI. Pages 68 - 69 in the manual allows programming of the remote via the buttons.

As you can see in the product description this player supports a wide variety of discs. One long awaited favorite is the ability to record to DVD +/- R Dual Layer.DVD-RAM is great because playback supports 1.3x playback by pressing [play] a second time. Press [play] again to return to normal speed. Now you can record your favorite programs in digitalquality (Analog only to VHS.), skip commercials, and watch them faster on DVD-RAM. The upconversion means you almost don't miss the HD airing. Plus you have the ability to cross copy VHS to DVD and vice verser, providing copy protection is not an issue.

One of my favorite features missing on this unit is "shorten segment". It easily allowed cutting out commercials, yet leave a single video file. Alternately, "divide program" allows cutting around the commercials, then you may delete them. It's a bit more time consuming and leaves you with a fragmented video file. This will not affect play back as it simply jumps to the next video block. However, the "combine chapters" function only works with "chapters" you create, and doesn't combine the segments of cut pieces.

Thus I must agree it is a bit more complex to use, and you will need to spend some time with the manual and even cross reference some pages. It is time well spent as it is nothing you won't learn with repeated use. It's not rocket science. You'll be a pro in no time.

While I wish this had a hard drive and recorded in HD, I can't ding the product because that is not the design intent. Maybe next years model. I'm very picky in what I like and I am VERY happy with this player.

This is a great way to give that old 4:3 analog TV a digital tuner and keep it around a few more years. Plus you could receive more digital channels than analog! But only HDMI supports upconversion. Even with some short comings such as the standard definiton digital tuner, this player does it all and does it extremely well.

My two biggest gripes which make me wish I never sold my analog GoVideo combo.Finalized DVD-R will NOT copy to VHS. Only unfinalized DVD-R will copy providing the material is not copy protected. I can no longer copy a couple of regular DVD's to tape. Maybe there are tweaks to be found. But my need to copy to tape isn't as great as was my desire to do so. Cest la vie.

For more on this product download the manual and firmware updates at the Panasonic website.

Panasonic DVD-S54K 1080p Upconverting DVD Player Review

Panasonic DVD-S54K 1080p Upconverting DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are DVD players out there in the same price range that offer a better picture. But what the Panasonic has going for it is rugged construction, a good remote, quick loading, easy set up and it plays everything (not multi-region though). I bought the S54 to replace my S47 which has given me six years of good service and is still running (the motor is getting tired though). I have tried other brands, including a Philips, which gave me just six months of service. So six years of intense use for this price is excellent (My friend's S47 is still going strong after six years). I watch my quality DVDs on a Denon or Marantz, but like all good DVD players, they can't handle shoddy media. They stick, skip or refuse to load. Which is why I always have a cheap DVD player on hand for less than perfect media. The S54 does that job in style, none of that dreaded 'disc error'. Simply put, this Panasonic range is the AK47 of DVD players. If it had better picture quality it would rate five stars.

SONY TCDD100 - 10th Anniversary Datman DAT Player/Recorder

The other reviewer comments that DAT tapes are "hard to find, even on eBay." While I don't know how hard they are to find on eBay, they are readily available at numerous web sites. I've been very happy with my Sony DAT recorder - it's an older model, but they're very high quality and have all the inputs and outputs you want. Hi-MiniDisk is potentially going to be the final nail in the coffin, however, because tape has reliability issues and doesn't last as long.

First of all, this radio is a fantastic deal.If you are looking for an easy to use radio without lots of flair, this is the unit for you.Really the only constant annoyance with the unit is that it beeps 3 times every time you turn off the car and your friends will make fun of you for it :D

The bad news: after 2 years, the aux input jack on the front stopped working. It was easy to fix, so I'll share how to do it in case others have the same problem.

First, remove the faceplate, then unscrew the back of the faceplate so you can get at the guts.In the corner, you will see a little detachable chip with the aux jack attached.Mine had two problems that I needed to fix.The jack had become too loose so that I was having connection issues, so I used a pin to bend the connectors back in tighter.I also had to solder the white and black wires back to the aux chip (they are labeled on the chip so it is easy).Since then it has worked perfectly!Hopefully this helps for everyone else with an iPod that gets a lot of use out of their aux jack!

This was my first time installing internal PC hardware. The illustrated instructions are short and simple. I had it going in a very short time and have burned 4 DVD's (Maxell brand DVD+R) all with success. Used 8x writing speed to make sure my computer could keep up, so I have not tested it on higher speeds.
The bundled Nero software is also easy to use without reading any manual and made a very professional looking DVD menu easily.

JVC XL-FZ258BK 5-CD Changer Review

JVC XL-FZ258BK 5-CD Changer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great buy at twice the price. There are two features I would have liked but not major ones.Let me say first of all, I am a part time DJ and I cannot tie up all my CDs in a large 100 or 200 CD carousel.Ineed easy access to load and play lots of new music to build play lists. If you never remove your CDs then I would consider a different player.Ifyou carry your music back and forth to the car or work (or DJ like I do)and want to only load a few CDs for an evening then this is the best I'veseen.First, the good features; a 5 CD drawer that can be opened withoutstopping play, good display, easy to use remote, easy to use front buttons,a power cable that detaches from the back (a BIG help in a crowded cabinetlike mine), optical digital connection, headphone jack w/volume control. Now, the bad features; there seems to be no way to display the time for acut other than the elapsed time.I am slightly disappointed in thisobvious feature I have seen on every CD player in the last 10 years or so. A minor irritant to me, you might not miss it.The other feature is theoptical digital.I would have liked a coax digital as my Kenwood VR-309receiver only has one optical port and that is used by my JVC XV-511 DVD. Other components in my system for sound, 3 x Dual 5" Vifa speakers w/ Aldome tweeters from Speaker City in Glendale, CA, with 2 x Optimus 5 fromRadio Shack for surrounds. The sound of this setup is superb. This unitis a great replacement for my Kenwood DP-R3080 CD.

Product Description:
Although it's a budget model, the JVC XL-FZ258BK five-disc carousel player still satisfies many requirements for ergonomic operation and quality sound reproduction. JVC equips the XL-FZ258BK with play exchange, which lets you change any four discs while one is playing. An optical digital output lets you record direct to CD-R or minidisc for pure digital copies and also facilitates integration with a surround receiver and home theater.
JVC has long been recognized for its dedication to high sound quality. Accordingly, this player offers JVC's exclusive P.E.M. D.D. (Pulse Edge Modulation Differential-Linearity-Errorless) digital-to-analog (D/A) converter, touted by many as one of the most accurate and "musical" one-bit D/As available. The converter is designed to render all the delicacy and subtlety of recorded music, and an 8x oversampling digital filter lends a helping hand.
Conveniences include continuous play and smart random play, five individual disc-select keys on the front panel, and a remote control with 10-key pad for direct disc and track access. The XL-FZ258BK also offers a 20-track program chart, resume functionality (letting you pick up where you left off before you turned off the player), program play (up to 32 tracks and/or discs), and four-way repeat (which lets you repeat all tracks, a single track, programmed tracks, and random-play options).
JVC has thoughtfully provided an independent volume control for the player's headphone jack, and the unit comes with a disc-stabilizing clamper to reduce potentially sound-degrading internal vibrations.
JVC's enhanced Compu Link control system uses intuitive technology to foster communication between various JVC components. This unit comes with a one-year warranty on parts and a 90-day warranty on labor.

Sony RDR-VX530 DVD Recorder & VHS Combo Player Review

Sony RDR-VX530 DVD Recorder & VHS Combo Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The VX530 is a neat machine and works great. It's easy to use and, so far, produces very good results.One-touch dubbing is as easy as it gets as long as nothing is copy protected.I can vouch for this one... it's a winner.
The only thing to watch out for is buying from Amazon's vendors. The one I bought was supplied by, and shipped by, J&R Electronics. The Sony box was packaged only in a plastic bag and was received in damaged condition.Since factory boxes are usually designed for sitting on store shelves and moderate protection, and not shipping cross country, sure enough the unit was also damaged.
Maybe I had a bad day, but I found J&R Electronics not the easiest people to try to return something to.Anyway, since I was under somewhat of a time constraint, I bought one from Best Buy (and got a better price as well... on sale). The new one, of course, works fine and I'm really happy with the VX530.
Bottom line... Great machine, but be a little careful who you buy from.
Since this is a review of the VX530 and not J&R, five stars for the machine... one star for poor packaging.

Sony VAIO VGN-FW465J/H 16.4-Inch Laptop - Gray Review

Sony VAIO VGN-FW465J/H 16.4 inch Laptop - Gray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this laptop as a birthday present for myself. Before getting this, I browsed different computers and considered Dell XPS 16, Mac Pro 15 inch and Lenovo Y650 as well. After all the comparisons that I made according to the design & features of all the laptops, Vaio FW won over a lot of mile.

Price: The price is very reasonable having jam-packed features. If you customized all the features that Vaio FW has to the other aformentioned units, i bet it will cost a lot lot more. See below prices comparison according to specs that Vaio FW465 offers with certain differences:

a.) Sony FW - From the main Sony site it is Less than 1,200 (including the mail-in-rebate) plus free 100 music downloads while from amazon.com it will be 1,029 (including rebate)

b.) Mac Pro 15 - Around 2k! The difference in specs with the Vaio FW are the following: backlit keyboard and battery life are the pros for Apple as I can see it. Apple have Mac OS but Sony offers free Windows 7 upgrade, sooo I still stick to that. The graphic card of Mac is Nvidia 9400m while Vaio have the astonishing HD4650. Vaio have bigger and brighter screen not to mention the Dolby sounds and Blu-ray capability - Mac Pro? .... NOT!
Disclaimer:Mac fan boys might read this and may say that I am just poor or anything (like they always do to people who didn't choose Mac) ---- you're wrong. I can afford Mac but the features they offer doesn't meet my standards. So chill and understand that people have different options in choosing computers.. peace!

c.) Dell XPS 16 - From its site - Around 1,650 having the same specs as the Vaio FW. I am also alright with this, but I have been reading so much negative reviews about the heat and the death blue screen for Dell lately. Soooo, that actually makes me a little bit cautious about recent Dell products.

d.) Lenovo Y650 - Around USD1,300 without the blu-ray capability, only 5400 rpm HD, havingNVIDIA GeForce G 105M 256MB Graphic card and Screen LED 1366x76. This is still ok, knowing that Lenovo's are really durable.

Main Features: I like how they customized it to have 2.53ghz of processor speed with 320gb of memory having 7200rpm. That feature itself is already a plus compared to any other laptops out there. The blu-ray capability makes your HD experience of watching movies really great combined with High Definition Audio with Dolby Digital Live and the brightness of the screen. Nobody else (as of now) does great Blu-ray experience the same way Sony does it, for me. The graphic card was also upgraded to Ati Radeon HD4650 with 1gb dedicate dvideo RAM making your gaming experience really great. I also like the classy look of Vaio FW with the hinge and just seeing the Vaio logo makes people WOW already. Also, almost all my gadgets (PSP, my cellphone, camera and music player) are sony, so I find this convenient having the magic gate card slot. The motion eye camera, the pebble black key panels and the multimedia dedicated buttons are awesome as well. One more thing, if you guys are concerned about the heat being produced by this laptop - don't worry because it has a great cooling system and dock design. The heat is common to all laptops but this one is a lot cooler than others (compared to my old gateway, dell, macbook and my dad's toshiba).

I just wish it has a backlit keyboard to make it a complete package already (though the screen is too bright that you can see the keyboard panel as well, during night). Also, the bloatwares should be lessen -- I don't find this an issue but I know it's a hassle for some. You can delete them anyway but you have to allot some of your time in doing so. One more thing, you have to do a lot of things to maximize the performance of the laptop during the setup.

I don't need to make this really long. Overall, the unit is very nice and it has totally awesome features with it. This is a great buy and you can never go wrong with Vaio FW. I bet you can make use of this laptop for many years without being out-dated. I am a meticulous person when choosing my gadgets --- and this unit meets my expectation!

I ordered the Vaio FW neoprene together with this unit and it fits quite well.

Sharp MDSR60S Minidisc Player/Recorder Review

Sharp MDSR60S Minidisc Player/Recorder
Average Reviews:

This is a great MD player/recorder will sleek looks and good sound quality. For the price, the accessories package that comes with this unit is probably the best on the market. You get a rechargeable battery, a charger, a case, an optical cable, a remote, and a pair of pretty decent headphones, and all for (a good price). Compare that with other MD units and you will see how much more of a bargain you are getting with the MD-SR60.
Sharp has always been good with recording and playback capabilities on their MD players and this unit is no different. Unlike some Sony units whose playback volume tends to be too "weak," the Sharp MD-SR60 plays recordings loud and robust. The remote is also an added bonus, although a LCD display on it would have been nice.
Aesthetically, this unit is as nice as they come. It's not the smallest or the lightest, but considering the built-in, multi-function battery compartment, this unit is pretty compact.
With the MP3 craze lately, I would definitely recommend and MD player over a MP3 player anyday. Not only can MD players record MP3 songs off your computer, but they provide many other functions as well (voice recordings, digital CD replication).

Philips DVDR3505/37 1080i Upscaling DVD Recorder with Built-In Tuner Review

Philips DVDR3505/37 1080i Upscaling DVD Recorder with Built-In Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Phillips DVDR3505/37 has the best "digital tuner" picture quality out of the two other DVD recorders that I have tested with "digital tuners" (Panasonic and Samsung). The Phillips DVDR3505 produces an amazingly clear OTA digital picture on my old 27 inch Sanyo analog "box" TV using an indoor antenna. The Phillips 3505 and the 27inch TV are connected with regular "composite cables". The resulting OTA digital picture is amazingly detailed and clear with little or no annoying "dot crawl". Another important feature for me in selecting the Phillips DVDR3505 is that it allows you to choose "4.3 pan & Scan" to view OTA digital programs in full screen on a "box" TV (no black bars caused by "HD" OTA programs). In the 4.3 pan & scan mode the OTA digital picture is shown in full screen but is not distorted looking (no long and stretched faces) and the picture framing matches the full screen picture seen on my analog OTA TV in a side by side comparison. In addition the picture clarity/sharpness in the "4.3 pan & scan" full screen mode is superb! The same effect should be achieved when watching a purchased or rented "widescreen" DVD movie on your "Box" TV in the 4.3 pan & scan mode. The cons for the Phillips DVDR3505 are its slow channel change and slow recording set up. One additional problem I have experienced is that the unit looses its channel set up under certian conditions. At this point in my life, the quality of the picture that you see from your cable, Sat, or OTA programs is what is most important to me and my family when watching TV. The truth is that I have put up with poor reception using analog TV with "rabbit ears" antennas long enough, so the amazing picture quality of the Phillips is what sold me. The Phillips DVDR3502 wins hand down in that category and is the main reason that I sent the other more expensive feature rich DVD recorders back to the store. My family and I have been able to work around or forgive all of the "cons" reported about for the Phillips DVDR3505 and because we are basic users the Phillips meets our needs for recording OTA TV programs while providing a "Wow factor" in picture clarity when watching "real time" OTA digital TV through our analog "box" TV. Also, a "Wow factor" is achieved even when watching OTA digital program recorded on DVD using the Phillips DVDR3505. Image reproduction is excellent in two highest image recording modes. Before buying see if the features on the Phillips DVDR3505/37 matches your basic needs. If viewing pleasure has been lacking for OTA broadcasts then get ready to receive the "Best Picture" award from friends and family when using the Phillips DVDR3505.

These CD-Rs will work with most systems. 95% of mine recorded just fine. The only problem I had was that over time, the white coating on the CD has started to peel off. This hasn't happened to all my discs, but a few of them have started to chip, causing problems with the playback.

In general, these are pretty good budget price CDs for everyday use. But if you're looking for something to save your songs or data for a long period of time, choose something else.

Amazon forwarded my order to ANTonline when I tried to buy these DVD's.I will never deal with ANTonline again. They are the worst seller that Amazon deals with. They sent the wrong product to me then never ever bothered to correct the situation. After writing to them twice they only answered me once then just dropped me.

Amazon did take the opportunity to step up to the plate by crediting my credit card.Don't ever deal with Antonline.

Verbatim DVD's are the best and the only printable surface DVD's I can count on in my MacBook Pro.

Samsung SSG-2200KR Rechargeable Child 3D Glasses Review

Samsung SSG-2200KR Rechargeable Child 3D Glasses
Average Reviews:

My daughter loves the styling as do I. The only minor issue is the glasses are a little big on her (5 yrs old). I'm sure she'll grow into them but some type of adjustable arms would have been nice. I'm going to try those velcro straps for sunglasses. Other than this small issue, I would recommend these glasses.

Canon HG10 AVCHD High Definition Camcorder with Optical Image Stabilizer Review

Canon HG10 AVCHD High Definition Camcorder with Optical Image Stabilizer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using camcorders since 1985 and I've used almost every possible format available to consumers. As of Oct. 2007, I can firmly say that this is by far the best camcorder ever, in terms of the picture quality, convenience, and the price. Although there are some limitations in the AVCHD format (I don't want to repeat here again), the convenience of the hard drive made me choose the HG10 and I have absolutely no regret at all.

First of all, I would like to clarify other reviewer's information that might misguide some folks. The HG10 does include the software to transfer and to edit the video footage for a PC.It comes with Ulead DVD MovieFactory SE for editing and burning DVDs and AVCHD-DVDs (can be playable on some blu-ray players and Playstation 3. It's a dvd that has HD pictures). If other reviewers have only a Mac, their complaints are valid, since the HG10 only includes a picture browser to handle the still pictures, not video for a Mac.

For the most consumers like me, the DVD MovieFactory works pretty well.I just burned a standard DVD (yes, an MPEG2 DVD that you watch everyday) with the DVD MovieFactory and am very satisfied with the result.Converting HD pictures to the SD format does not degrade the original HD quality much and I was impressed by that. I added chapter marks, made menus, and did little editing.Editing the AVCHD format needs a ton of processing power. If you don't have a fast computer (dual core, 2 ghz or faster), it will be extremely slow. I was using a Pentium 4 3.6 GHz, 2 gigs RAM, Windows Vista Business PC to make a DVD and it worked OK.Making an AVCHD-DVD is faster since it does not need to re-encode the video files. If you don't do a complicate editing job and want to merge video clips from the HG10 and burn a DVD, you could use a slower computer for that purpose.I have experience using Adobe Premiere, Ulead VideoStudio, and iMovie (for Mac).Although DVD MovieFactory might not be the right tool for the professional work, it is quite good for a home use.I surprised my friends with the DVDs created from it.My only gripe is a complicated software activation process. You should read the software instructions carefully to avoid the hassle (specially the web link in the last page). I wasted 2 hours just to activate the software.

Yes, the HG10 does not have an IEEE1394 (or firewire, or iLink whatever you call it) port. However, it does not need one.All the footages are already stored in AVCHD format and you only need to transfer those files to your computer. If you have to capture the video and encode it to a file from the magnetic tape (MiniDV), you might need an IEEE1394 port. However, for the HG10, you don't need to do that.If you look at other hard drive based camcorders, they don't have it either (they mostly have a USB port).Right before the HG10, I used a Sony DCR-SR100 and it does not have a firewire port, either.

The HG10 has a mini HDMI (type C) port, so if you want to connect the HG10 via HDMI, you'll need to order a mini-HDMI to HDMI (type C to type A) cable. The HG10 only includes a composite A/V cable and a component video cable. My minor complaint is that it does not come with a shoulder strap. This toy costs $1,000, so a nice looking shoulder strap should be given (I am using one from an old Canon ZR camcorder).

I was told that the HG10 uses the same optical mechanism as Canon HV20, which is known to be the best consumer HD camcorder on the market (it records in HDV format on tapes, not AVCHD on the hard drive). So I expected that the picture quality would be pretty good and I was right. If you have a full 1080p HD display, you will be amazed.Personally, I use a 720p projector at home and am quite impressed by the quality of the picture.Unlike Sony AVCHD camcorders, the sound is recorded in 2 channel Dolby Digital format (Sony records in 5.1 channel Dolby Digital). The good thing about 2 channel recording is that it does not record my breath. With 5.1 channel recording, you can easily hear your breathing sound, since two of the mics are catching rear sound.

For the low light performance (like indoor shot), the HG10 is comparatively better than any other consumer level camcorder on the market that I have seen. However, don't expect too much.It cannot be compared to the low light quality of a $3,000 camcorder. My impression is that its low light picture quality is closest to a decent 3CCD high-priced consumer level camcorder.

I have been waiting for long to have an excellant hard drive based AVCHD camcorder. There are many hard drive based camcorders on the market now and none of these have caught my attention for some minor reasons, such as no external mic jack, no usb port on the camcorder, or the poor low light performance. Finally I found the right one and am so happy that I waited.

Thanks to Canon for introducing good equipment at the right price (under a grand).I hope this review helps some people who have waited like me.

==Update, as of Feb. 12, 2008

As of today, I have been using the HG10 for more than 4 months.I have taken so many precious moments and this camcorder never disappoints me.The best moment I had was the day I brought this camcorder to my friend's home for a party.I connected it to Samsung LNT4065F 40" 1080p LCD HDTV and showed a junior high soccer tournament game.Everyone, I mean everyone, in that house said "Wow."The picture quality coming out of this combination was AMAZING !!I felt like I was watching an HD documentary from BBC or National Geographic. As I said in the review, I use an HG10 with a 1080i/720p projector (Epson Cinema 400, 3 LCD projector), but the HG10 picture coming out from the Samsung LCD TV was truly exceptional and far superior (very bright and way more crisp).I have never seen such a good picture coming from any other consumer level camcorder.Although the indoor shots have some grainy pictures (I tested some indoor video shots, too), the outdoor shots are flawless. Most of my friends who saw it wanted to buy the HG10 and I started to dream about having the Samsung LNT4065F LCD TV ever since.:)

The only drawback that I have found new from the HG10 is that if you want to transfer video files from the HG10 to a computer, you must have an AC adapter (correct me, if I am wrong).Sometimes, I want to transfer video to a friend's computer right after I take it.However, if I don't have the AC adapter for the HG10, it simply refuses to do it (it asks me to hook it up). This is very cumbersome to me.

I just heard that the new Sony hard drive camcorder has a 120GB hard drive. However, the 5 hr 30 mins of video in highest quality that I can take from the HG10 is still pretty good.

If I had to choose a camcorder today, I would choose the HG10 again.I can't wait to see what the next version of the HG10 can do.

==Update, for the Mac users, as of Mar. 29, 2008

I recently bought a MacBook and found out one thing that I want to share with other Mac users.First of all, the HG10 does work with iMovie '08 and Leopard OS (10.5) on intel Macs.If you connect the HG10 to the Mac, all the importing process will go very smoothly. You should be patient, since the Mac converts AVCHD files from the HG10 to their propriety format (it increase the size of the original files to 7-10 times). However, iMovie '08 does not import .mts or .m2ts files directly. iMovie can only import AVCHD files from the HG10 or the storage space (external hard drive) that exactly has the same directory structure like the HG10. I mean, it does not import individual .mts (.m2ts) files.I have searched through many apple discussion forums and have not found solutions for it.

If someone only saves .mts or .m2ts files without having the original directory structure (it means, no meta data, video files only) like me, he/she has to use the conversion utility like Voltaic to convert .mts or .m2ts files. If you have a non-Intel Mac, you can import AVCHD files this way (converting through the utility like Voltaic) only, though. This conversion process takes significant amount of time and the storage space.

I wish iMovie can directly handle .mts (.m2ts) files soon. Until then, I should stick with the bundled Ulead software on PC for my old video backups. Disappointed...

==Update, for the YouTube lovers, as of May. 22, 2009

I still love the HG10. It is the best.Probably you already know about this.YouTube allows to upload the .mts or .m2ts files created by AVCHD camcorders. So, you can upload the file directly without any conversion process on YouTube and it is HD.I cannot thank YouTube enough about it.

Samsung DVD-P721M Progressive-Scan DVD Player Review

Samsung DVD-P721M Progressive-Scan DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Samsung P721 DVD Player has once again proved the technical creativity/competance of Samsung as a Consumer Electronics leader.
This player has a very unique feature set that complies with the conventional DVD feature set and add several next generation features that are bridging the gap between PC's and consumer electronic boxes. The P721 offers superior Progressive scan output and supports DVD/CD-DA/CD-R/MP3/VCD formats and has added support for Memory stick interface.
There are no other DVD models with support for memory stick. With this player, you can simply insert a memory stick from a digital camera and view thumbnails or full screen images on your TV set that is hooked to the P721. Additionally, you can copy MP3 files on a memory stick using a PC and the P721 will decode the files on the Memory stick and plays them back with perfection!.
The GUI on this player is totally superb and very simple to follow thru. Overall the player has more to offer when compared to other players that are in the same price range.

Product Description:
The DVD-P721M integrates digital audio and video like no DVD player before it, offering not merely high-tech features like progressive-scan video and 3:2 pulldown, but a dedicated Memory Stick port that makes this the ideal companion for Sony digital cameras and MP3 players.
Video Features
The progressive-scan output is king of this unit's video features, but keep in mind that you'll need a high-definition or HD-ready TV to appreciate its benefits. (The included S-video and composite-video outputs work just fine with older TVs, however.) Progressive scanning displays all 480 video lines in one pass to provide strong vertical resolution and flicker-free, high-density images. Likewise, 3:2 pulldown is a videophile treat. It accurately translates 24-frames-per-second movies into 30-frames-per-second television signals, correcting any distortion and removing redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture on any component-video-equipped direct-view or projection TV or monitor.
Audio Features
The DVD-P721M is compatible with standard CDs, audio CD-Rs and CD-RWs, and discs encoded with MP3 audio files. A 96 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter ensures optimal decoding of all disc formats, while 2x audio playback lets you hear the movie or music while you search, where most other DVD players are mute. The player's Phantom Surround processor simulates surround-sound effects using only two speakers, and a 25-inch stereo headphone jack has a convenient rotary volume control.
Connections
Beyond the Memory Stick port, the DVD-P721M's traditional audio connections include two sets of left/right analog-audio outputs for compatibility with stereo Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions and two digital-audio outputs (one each of coaxial and optical) to route Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel signals to a surround-decoding audio/video receiver. The back panel offers one output each for S-video and top-of-the-line component-video, as well as two standard composite-video outputs.
Other Features
The player provides motion zoom, chapter digest, and a universal remote control (with jog/shuttle dial) that operates the DVD-P721M as well as most TVs and VCRs. You even get a special EZ remote for controlling basic DVD functions. Supplied accessories include a composite-video AV cable, instruction manual, two remote controls, and two AA batteries.
