Sony MHCGX99 Mini Hi-Fi Component System with 3-Disc CD Changer and Powered Subwoofer Review

Sony MHCGX99 Mini Hi-Fi Component System with 3-Disc CD Changer and Powered Subwoofer
Average Reviews:

Radio has good channel separation and good sound on FM. I use it in my office.

Things I liked:
It has super power (enough to run you out of the room).
The remote is easy to use
Plays MP3 on the cd player
Price was fair for the sound quality.

Some of the things I wish it had but doesn't:
1. More inputs, there is only one mini-plug input. I have a tape deck, and stream from my computer but there is no input for the tape machine.

2. Tuneable EQ...Equalizer is pre-configured for five or so different options. There's no way to tweak it further. I wish there was a way I could add more highs.

3. Sub woofer doesn't turn off when the unit is off. It's plugged into a different outlet and stays on all the time.

I listen to this every day in the office and it's great for that purpose.

Sony D-NE10 ATRAC Walkman Portable CD Player (Silver) Review

Sony D-NE10 ATRAC Walkman Portable CD Player
Average Reviews:

WOW!!, i have to say this is one of the best sony products this year!. it's an upgrade from the powerful d-ne1. This is by far the smallest sony cd player!! even smaller than d-ej2000. but it is couple point ounces heavier, nothing too noticable. I love the design of this thing!! it has an attractive magnesium and aluminum body!!. i have the silver one, didn't even know they had black and gold ones. i woulda picked the black one but oh well. The software so far hjolds me about 350 songs. the quality is almost as good as a normal cd!. ok lets see te upgrades from d-ne1:
-smaller
-design
-new recharging cradle
-1 battery and 1 AA battery holds up to 85 hours!
-3 different lights for ff, rw, and play
-upgraded stock headphones (although not good as tho'se $50 headphones, it is still much better than the other stock headphones).
-it has full metal body
-THE BIGGEST ADDITION TO THE CD PLAYER!! it has an EQUALIZER!!.. if you want more bass than level 2 bass, just adjust the equalizer. if you want more treble, just adjust equalizer. it is simple. but i always keep mine on heavy, i can hear things crystal clear.
if you are looking for a cd player in a price range of $180-200, this is the best of the best. if you want somewhere $100-150 ones, check out the iriver ones. that is the one i had before this one. it was around $130 worked great but just didn't like some picky features. btw cd players are superb compared to md or mp3 players, first off a software like this can hold up to 490 songs on a disc, most people don't even need that many songs, but if you do, simple, burn another cd. now 2 cd= memory of a typical ipod. and to tell you, the equalizer and the bass on this thing is incredible. im more ofabass p[erson, and the equalizer makes the bass just perfect for me. this is about as light as an mp3 player but not as small. if you get this cd player, you'll realize when you put it in your pocket, it feels like you just put a cd in your pocket. it's that light!!. with the metallic body, it is well buiilt. especially with the 1 year warranty. i recommend this to EVERYONE

Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, DivX & SACD Review

Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, DivX & SACD
Average Reviews:

Unbelievalbe picture quality like all other reviewers are saying. Changing the player to Region 0 (all region) is easy: 1. Press Setup on remote control to access the setup page, 2.Enter 9210 on the remote 3.A service menu will pop up, 4. Select a region: 0- 6 in region code. 0 is all-region. Press Setup on remote again to exit. It should play all region and PAL discs. Hope that helps.

(added 12/18/07)
I've been using this player for a year now and I still LOVE it. My friend gave me a DVD with several movies in AVI and an XVid formats. Typically, I would have to watch these movies on my PC. I was pretty psyched to find that Oppo will play the files. When I popped in the disc, I see a blue menu with all the files. The player decodes each selected file and it had no problem playing 3 out of the 4 AVI files. For some reason, one of the AVI files won't play. The XVid file played fine. The quality of these compressed AVI files, as you can imagine, isn't great. But depending on the source of the AVI file, the output quality to a 46" HDTV is almost as good as a DVD and much better than VCD or VCR quality.

Product Description:
The DV-981HD is the latest incarnation in Oppo's highly aclaimed line of upconverting DVD players. It offers an HDMI interface (HDMI Specification 1.1), with HD upconversion ouput resolutions of 720p, 1080i, and full 1080p. This is Oppo's most full-featured player yet, and as such, it's not a DVD player for people with regular analogue sets. While the DV-981HD doesn't offer component output, and doesn't output standard or native resolution, it does represent one of the best (if not the best) upconverting DVD players out there, and it's perfect for people with HDTVs up to full 1080p who aren't ready to jump on the HD DVD or Blu-ray bandwagen. In addition to excellent upconversion, the DV-981HD offers playback of a whole host of formats including DVD-Audio, Super Audio CS (SACD), Audio CDs, HDCD, WMA, Kodak Picture CDs, all version of DivX including DivX6, as well as Xvid, .SRT, .SMI, .IDX, and .SUB file formats.
Audio Features
The DV-981HD outputs audio in stereo or in 5.1 channel surround, either via HDMI, or through the included 5.1 analogue outputs. Other connections include S-Video out, and digital coaxial and optical audio outs. It features 24-bit, 192 kHz high resolution audio D/A converters, supportsvirtual surround in six settings, and has built-in equalizer, channel trim, and channel delay functions.
Farudgja DCDi Technology
Rather than trying to build their own upconversion technology for this machine, the Oppo DV-981HD the DCDi Faruja technology from Genesis Microchips. In addition to upscaling a DVD's native 720x480 interlaced video to 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, Farudja technology also detects content that has gone through 3:2 pull down to convert film content to NTSC for video, and recreates the original frames by blending the fields back together. It then processes for any edit mistakes and reconstrucs an accurate signal, producing an image free of motion artifacts. The unique DCDi algorithm can also identify moving edges within an image and adjust interpolation at a pixel level to create smooth edges for on-screen objects, eliminating the jaggy edges that commonly result from other upconversion techniques. Farudja processing also uses a proprietary "TruLife Enhancement" technology to identify transitions in the image considered to be details such as skin texture, freckles or hair, and enhance those to bring more detail in an image to life on the screen. This approach avoids image artefacts common with the peaking filter approach used by other systems for detail enhancement. The Farudja system uses temporal filtering for noise reduction, and can achieve 6 to 10 dB of Noise reduction without introducing artefacts or losing sharpness in the image.
Connections:

HDMI - High Definition Multimedia Interface: 1
Analog Stereo Audio (Mixed 2-Channel Left/Right): 1 group (2 connectors)
Analog 5.1 Channel Audio: 1 group (6 connectors)
    S/PDIF (IEC-958) Coaxial Digital Audio: 1
    S/PDIF (IEC-958) Optical Digital Audio: 1
    Composite Video: 1
    S-Video: 1
No Component Video (YPbPr/YCbCr) on the DV-981HD model. This model is designed for use with a display device with HDMI or DVI digital video input.

Compared with Other Oppo DVD player models
At the time of this writing, Oppo also has the DV-970HD upconverting player, and their originalOPD971H model. Of these three models, the DV-981HD is the only that upconverts to full 1080p, the other models offer upconversion to 720p or 1080i only. Both the DV-981HD and the DV-970HD offer Super Audio CD (SACD) playback, the OPDV971H does not. The other major difference to consider is that the DV-981HD and the OPDV971H both use Farudja processing for video upconversion. The DV-970HD uses a different upconversion system that may not be as full featured as the Farudja. For this reason Oppo recommends the DV-981HD, or the OPDV971H for use with larger screen HDTVs 50 inches or greater, while the DV-970HD is only recommended for HDTVs smaller than 50-inches. Oppo recommends the DV-970HD for use with external video processors or scalers, and suggests careful calibration of both the DV-981HD and the OPDV971H when used with DLP HDTVs. Both of these players are good for use with DLP HDTVs, but for the best picture, some setup time is required. For disply with a DVI input on your HDTV, an HDMI-DVI adapter is required with both the DV-981HD and the DV-970HD models.

RCA DRC6338 8-Inch Portable DVD Player Review

RCA DRC6338 8 inch Portable DVD Player
Average Reviews:

This unit has served my family well for over two years.

It has been dropped, kicked, vomited upon, covered in milk, slammed shut and open and still chugs along.

I get the occasional "invalid disc" error, but what should one expect with DVDs that are treated like flying discs (aka Frisbee ?) by toddlers and 4 year olds.A simple open and shut remedies the problem 9 out of 10 times.

The AC adaptor cord became frayed and inoperable, but this was due to operator abuse moving it to and fro from autos, and houses, and boats, and planes (no trains - yet). This was easily remedied by my local Radio Shack ? geek.

The battery still holds a charge for an hour or so after two years of a beat down by Dr. Destructo and her sidekick.

For the price offered and for my intended use (abuse by little ones) it is a fantastic buy and highly recommended. If you seek audiophile sound and video perfection the term "RCA" should never enter your keyboard.

I picked up a refurbished job from Tiger (I like Amazon but the deal was just too good) Works great for the short time I've had it. Got a new big HDTV that does the 1080 thing so I'm impressed. You can set it up to just come on at that rate but it has a botton to "toggle" through the options. The only minor complaint is the on light the BRIGHT blue on light is a bit much. Put a little round sticky thing to tone it down. Should you care, I'm going to give you a little "hack" information should you play disc from other than Zone One (you know who you are) It worked like a charm first time for me so I pass it on. I have the Alley McBeal complete set from the UK (can't get it in the US) plus a few DVD I pick up on vaction.

This just sets you DVD to Region "Free"--Region code hack posted by

Silver Surfer, November 05 2006:
DEAR FRIENDS, IT TOOK ME A LOT OF TIME AND PATIENCE, BUT I DID IT
GOT A SAMSUNG HD860, JUST HACKED THE REGION WITH THE SAMSUNG
REMOTE 00054D, I BOUGHT DVD PLAYER ON USA, REGION 1, I DID THIS, NOW
I CAN SEE ANY REGION DISK ON MY DVD PLAYER. . . SO HERE IS HOW
FIRST SET HDMI SEL BUTTON TO 480P, THEN OPEN TRAY NO DISK ON IT,
PRESS INFO BUTTON, AND PRESS NINE, UNTIL NUMBER 9 APPEARS ON LEFT
CORNER OF TV DISPLAY, THEN, TURN OFF DVD, THEN ON AND. . . . ENJOY
FREE REGION LIFE. . . BYE BYE!

You have to hit the number 9 repeatedly to get it to show and it will appear on the upper left corner of your screen (be careful the #9 shows up "over" the other information on the screen) but the whole things pretty groovy. Tiger had them for about $40 but even at twice the price it's very cool. The HDMI works great I put that into my HDTV then run the Optical sound from the the TV (it has optical out) to the Receiver for my "Surround" sound. Actually due to that blue light its gets just 4.5 stars but I rounded it up to 5! It does require the HDMI hook up to benifit from the Up-Convert feature, works for me my Toshiba HDTV has 2 in HDMI and wth the "Optical" sound out from the TV makes for a very good set up for me.

Product Description:
Enjoy your favorite DVD movies in high definition without having to wait for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players with the affordable Samsung DVD-HD860 single-disc, progressive scan DVD player--the perfect partner to your HD-capable LCD or plasma TV. Where standard DVD players (even progressive scan models) provide just 480 lines of resolution, the DVD-HD860 will "upconvert" the picture to 720p or 1080i--taking full advantage of your HD television's sparkling resolution. This elegantly slim unit can also play a wide range of disc and file formats and offers a number of playback convenience features, including bookmarking, multiple camera angles, and folder accessibility on MP3/WMA-formatted discs.
The DVD-HD860 upconverts a standard DVD's native resolution (480p) to output close to high-definition formats (720p/1080i). To achieve that higher resolution, the player fills in additional image data by assessing existing pixels and intelligently predicting what the surrounding pixels should look like. Because the upconversion process occurs in the digital domain, no data is lost (compared with analog conversion) and the resulting image is close to pristine. To produce an upconverted picture, your high-def TV must have an HDMI connection (and HDCP support)--the 720p/1080i choice is only available when using the HDMI cable (which is not included). Also note that the DVD-HD860 is not a high-definition DVD player (i.e., not to be confused with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players, which play specially formatted high definition discs), so it will work with your existing DVD library.
This player is compatible with a wide range of disc formats, including DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW, VCD, and SVCD, as well as MP3, WMA, and JPEG file formats. Compression rates supported for MP3 are from 128-192 kbps and for WMA from 64-192 kbps. JPEG files can be seen in a slide show with intervals of 6, 12, or 18 seconds between images; and you can zoom in (2x or 4x) on an image or rotate it 90-degrees clockwise.
The bookmark function lets you mark and store up to three scenes at a time for easy recall. Instant replay shows you the previous 10 seconds of the movie again--in case you missed something important. Instant skip jumps ahead 10 seconds--in case you want to miss something. And parental control lets you set a password that must be given before a password-protected disc can be viewed.
It features the following video and audio connections:

    Composite AV Out (RCA): 1
    S-Video Out: 1
    Component video Out: 1
    HDMI AV Out: 1
    Coaxial digital audio Out: 1
    Optical digital audio Out: 1

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).
HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is a system for protecting DVD content outputted via DVI/HDMI from being copied. It provides a secure digital link between a video source (PC, DVD. etc) and a display device (TV, projector, etc). Content is encrypted at the source device to prevent unauthorized copies from being made.
High Definition Formats: The most common high-def (HD) video format is 720p, which displays video at 720 vertical by 1280 horizontal pixels. The "p" denotes that it is progressive scan, meaning that all video lines are filled at the same time. The 1080i format displays video at 1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels, and the "i" means that it is interlaced (the old-school way of presenting video where the screen scans the odd-numbered video lines first, then the even-numbered lines). The 1080p format has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, but it is a progressive scan format and thus has a constant vertical resolution of 720 lines.

Sony 80 Minute MiniDisc MD Color (8-Pack) Review

Sony 80 Minute MiniDisc MD Color
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought these SONY Colour Collection blank mini-discs for using with my MZ-R55, and they are excellent. No sound distortion, and definitely no comparison with the Memorex discs. Nothing flimsy here. Only quality, and 5 pretty colours. I really like the charcoal tone one.
What's even better, is that I can put all the discs away in the storage case, and not worry about where they are individually, because they are always there together. If you didn't know already, the colours are: emerald, topaz yellow, charcoal, sapphire and ruby. Even though there are only 8 pieces, there are obviously not two of each colour. If I am right, most sets come with 2 ruby, 2 topaz yellow, 2 emerald, 1 sapphire and 1 charcoal.
Anyhow, these discs withstand a lot of shock, and are to me, shock-resistant. I like the individual little cases they come in too. Nice touch with the transparent white plastic.
Well, these discs are totally worth the money, especially being 80 minutes. I can get lots of songs on them, and they're great for recording entire albums from MP3s.
Great Buy!

Sony RDR-GXD455 Single Deck DVD Recorder with Built In HD Tuner Review

Sony RDR-GXD455 Single Deck DVD Recorder with Built In HD Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this unit to replace an non ATSC tunered Sony DVD recorder (RDR-GX330). In comparison to the 330 the 455 is perhaps not as well built despite being over $65 more expensive. Both have fans built in and you will hear them if you don't have the unit inside of a cabinet. As a DVD recorder it is functionally very similar to the previous generation Sonys. The supplied remote is basically the same as the 330 uses with one extra button to control analog/digital switching. Also it will record HD programming but downconverts the signal to SD, for HD recording you will need to wait for the Blueray recorders to arrive.

Ultimately I am going to return the 455 because of the ATSC tuners performance. Switching betwen channels is very slow in comparison to analog and the Samsung DTB I have also used. I was unable to get the Sony to go directly to a channel by punching in the channel number. Picture quality is good on OTA digital channels but is perhaps not as clean looking as the Samsung DTB(if only the Samsung put out the menu on composite video I would have kept it). In comparison to the Samsung the Sony lacks a signal strength meter which I consider essential for determining antenna direction. For those used to it the Sony also lacks even the most basic form of TV guide. Due to lack of guide the Sony feels very much like a VCR. As such I would say the 455 would be a good option for those upgrading from a VCR but might be a dispointment if you are used to the advanced features found elsewhere.

To summarise the Sony RDR-GXD455 is merely an ok performer as DVD Recorder. It is definitely a version 1.0 product from Sony as far as ATSC intergration goes. If you are upgrading from a VCR it should be one to consider on your list. If you are considering an upgrade to get the ATSC tuner I would wait for the next years model.

I have no way to know if I got a bad model or if this is a bad design, but this Blu Ray player is way too noisy to use. When the unit is playing it has a loud fan noise and vibration that are a total distraction while trying to watch a movie.I was hoping to see some other reviews here to know if I just got a lemon or if this is a design flaw.Even a low price doesn't make this a good deal if the noise is always there.

LG LHB977 1000-Watt Blu-ray Disc Home Theater In a Box Review

LG LHB977 1000-Watt Blu-ray Disc Home Theater In a Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking to buy a surround sound system for my HDTV I purchased last year.First I was looking for an audio/video receiver (Yamaha, Onkyo, etc), but when I looked at adding speakers I kept choking on the price.I wasn't excited about buying a home theatre in a box, but I decided to check them out.I ran across this system and it had everything I was looking for, plus more.

First, the system worked right out of the box and setup was straightforward.

5.1 Surround- I'm not an audiophile, but far as I'm concerned the sound is great. It definitely enhances the viewing experience.

Blu-Ray Player-I wasn't planning on getting a Blu-ray player (I figured I would wait for the prices to drop), but the price was right for this system. The picture looks great on my 1080P Samsung TV.I have a minor complaint that it doesn't remember where you stopped while watching a movie. For example, if you switch to the main menu to access the player settings it will start at the beginning of the disc when you go back.

Netflix-This is the feature that convinced me to purchase the system.Setup was flawless and picture quality is good. The available movies for streaming are somewhat limited (generally older and less popular movies), but we've watched many more movies on Netflix than Blu-Ray.You select what movies to add to your "instant" queue on a computer and then they are available for selection in the Netflix menu.

Pandora Internet Radio-I didn't know anything about Pandora until I bought the system, but now I love it.You setup an account on a computer and then select the type of music you like.On the LHB 977 you can then play the "radio stations" you've setup on your computer.

Youtube-When I purchased the system it did not have Youtube, however I recently received a firmware upgrade with Youtube and CinemaNow.As you would expect from Youtube the picture quality is not great and videos can be choppy.

CinemaNow- Firmware upgrade brought this feature in.I haven't used it since I have Netflix.

USB Input-You can put MP3s on a USB drive and play them on the LHB977.The LHB 977 music player is very basic.Since it doesn't read MP3 file tags it cannot organize the music by artist, album, genre, etc.I'm hoping LG will upgrade this feature with a firmware download because I would use this feature more often. You can also look at photos via the USB drive, but I haven't tried this feature.

IPOD docking station- I don't own an IPOD so I can't comment.

Inputs-There is more than enough inputs for me.I have my HD cable box connected via HDMI (leaving one still available) and my VCR with RCA plugs. My only complaint is selecting the inputs. You have to cycle through each input one at a time.It would be nice to select the inputs by using the TV menu.

FM/AM Radio-I hooked the antennas up since they were in the box, but I didn't buy the system for standard radio.Honestly the reception is pretty poor right behind my TV stand and I'm not willing to put the antennas somewhere to get good reception.

REMOTE- I don't really use it.I realized quickly that I needed a Universal remote to control all my components.

Received this stereo for Christmas and just set it up yesterday. So far I'm quite pleased with the system. One important note though should you buy this unit. The packaging sucks.BE VERY CAUTIOUS WHEN OPENING THE BOX.If you cut through the tape on the top flaps, as 90% of folks would, you could quite likely slash a gash right down the center of the remote. If TEAC had used an additional thin piece of cardboard on the top of the styrofoam or just placed the remote to one side of the center of the box it wouldn't have been a problem, but they didn't.

One other small thing, with such thin speakers that are easily mounted to a wall they should have designed them with the lower foot area being removable. The speakers are only about an inch thick but they are nearly three inches off the wall when mounted to account of the stand portion beneath the actual speaker.

Well, you know Sony would be responsible! I absolutely love my walkman!! I have owned several models over the years and the more Sony builds, the better they become. This model does not skip at all and mine has been through the gym and on hikes! When you get tired of the disc, you just switch over to the tuner. You have the option to program stations (not a new feature of course) and they come in crystal clear. I just love the option, especially when you are planning on extended use.
Very durable as usual and a nice strap to slip over your hand for easy/secure handling.
Sony equates quality!

Sony D-EJ756CK CD Walkman Portable Compact Disk Player Review

Sony D-EJ756CK CD Walkman Portable Compact Disk Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The CD has many things going for it but there is one very nagging aspect that couldn't allow me to give it a full 5 stars. For all this CD player has going for it, again, one aspect in the design had me wonder just what the heck Sony was thinking when they did this. You'll see what I'm talking about below.
Pros:
- Sound: The Player has a good sound system. Each volume level has about three settings each, totaling nine levels in all. Meaning if you are at volume 1, you can increase the volume three times before it goes towards it's next volume level of 2. So for each volume level your on, it can be increase further to your preferred settings. But honestly, most people won't tell the difference cause most of us jam the volume up towards the maximum by default. There is also a nice feature included here which allows the volumes to be placed at a low standard settings of 3 and below. I believe this was put in just in case one needed to quickly lower the volume from it's high setting to low instead of holding the volume button all down until it was low or turning the player off instead. But Sony says it's for ear protection. There is also a bass settings that allows you to control it via two simple settings. But the way the sound quality on this player is, you won't even need it unless you really wanna kill your ear drums.
-Size: The size of this player is very nice and compact. It easily fits into an average pocket and bag without much of a fuss of being big and clunky. You can palm it in the palm of your hand for goodness sakes. Small size with good sound quality? Isn't that what your here looking for?
-Features: Well, other than having the ability to play CD-R/RW cd's flawlessly, there's not that much to this category.
-Accessories: This player comes packed with standard car kit accessories of a tape and battery adapter and a regular AC adapter. But it does come with a nice extras with the average driver in mind. Included with the player is a small knob shaped remote that connects where the headphone would go. This adapter allows you to fast forward and rewind by turning it in the proper direction as well as stop the CD player and move back and forward through song selections all without having to take your eye off the road to see where you are on the player. Oh yeah, don't be fooled by the picture of this CD that you see above. Those flip back headphones DO NOT come with the player. The player includes standard headphone that, surprisingly, are very good. Also to be noted is that this player doesn't come with batteries. The player can use rechargeable metal nickel hydrate, A.K.A Ni-MH, batteries. It can even charge them for you by using the AC adapter as a power source. But one thing here is that Sony advises that you only use THEIR brand of rechargeable Ni-MH batteries for the recharging feature. I don't know if this is a ploy for sales or that the player is not configured to charge those of another brand (which doesn't make sense since the recharging process is no different). I'd say as for recharging the batteries people, do so at your own risk.
Design 1: The Design of this player is nice, sleek easy to get to buttons with no fuss in trying to find things while jogging or in the dark. This player if very sturdy. Virtually NO SKIPPING AT ALL. I played the CD upside down and moving the player left, right, and sideways and no fluxtuation in the sound occurred. This player is built right. BUT....
Cons:
-Design 2: ....Sony's choice for where you put the batteries to power the player is absurd!!! The battery compartment is actually located INSIDE THE CD PLAYER!!! That's right, right were you put your CD's in. Right under the lid!!! This is the most dumbest thing I've ever seen. Most battery compartments are either located on the side or on the bottom of the CD players, but this player has you putting the batteries under the CD lid. And UNDER THE CD ITSELF!!! Now, let's look at this logically. Your batteries run out of power, what do you do? Replace them by going through a quick two step process: 1) open battery compartment, take out old batteries 2) put in new batteries and close battery compartment. Simple! For this player you have to 1) Open the lid, TAKE OUT YOUR CD!!! 2) Open battery compartment and take out the old ones 3) Replace with new batteries, close the lid 4) Put the CD back in, close the lid, then press play! This is so dang ridiculous I had to laugh when I seen this for the first time. How are people who are walking on the street or jogging have the time to go through this long process, which has you actually taking out the CD every time you want to change your batteries. Meaning you'd have to actually stop walking cause I doubt you'd want to drop your cd which you'll have to either hold with your other hand or between your fingers. And to make matters worse, but not too worse, the anti-shock/skip button is located here also. What makes that not so bad is cause well the CD comes with the anti-shock on the "on" setting by default. I mean who wants to listen to skipped music and have to go back and forth inside the CD lid all the time.
Conclusion: What? You still here? You've got a player that:
1) Has good sound
2) Plays CD-R/RW CD's
3) Won't Skip
4) Comes with nice Accessories
5) And Will last you a while.
Your search is over. Just buy and be happy.

Sony DVP-NC555ES ES 5-Disc DVD/SA-CD Player Review

Sony DVP-NC555ES ES 5-Disc DVD/SA-CD Player
Average Reviews:

It's hard to find a high-end DVD/CD player with 5 disc capability. Most today are only single disc. The SACD audio is awesome, but make sure you use the individual channel outputs for SACD as the optical out does not work on SACD for my tuner.Picture clarity is great and near HD quality. If you want a single unit to run high-end DVD and audio, buy this unit. The only complaint I have is that there is not a shuffle button on the unit, you have to use the remote.

Product Description:
Add cutting-edge technology to your home entertainment system with the five-disc DVP-NC555ES. This multichannel SACD player is made to sing to the ears of the audiophile, delivering highly nuanced aural detail--whether playing a standard CD or a Super Audio CD (SACD). And you'll get progressive-scan video on every DVD thanks to Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive video processing and the ultra-high-speed 216MHz/12-bit video digital-to-audio converter (DAC). Other features include the ability to change out four discs while the fifth continues playing, antiresonant design it minimize distortion from vibration, and a built-in Dolby Digital/DTS decoder with 5.1-channel output.
Like other DVD players in Sony's ES series lineup, the DVP-NC555ES is designed to take advantage of a broad range of disc formats that includes not only DVD-Video, but also DVD-R and DVD-RW discs recorded in the DVD-Video and VR formats; DVD+R and DVD+RW; CD, CD-R, CD-RW, CD MP3, and Video CD; as well as Super Audio CD stereo and multichannel media.
The Sony DVP-NC555ES take full advantage of the latest generation of multichannel Super Audio CD music. Multichannel SACD gives producers the ability to capture the precise ambience and reverberation that give any concert hall, jazz club, or recording studio its characteristic "sound."
The SACD's 1-bit signal is processed and decoded by Sony's CXD2753 DSD decoder LSI. This integrated circuit makes intelligent decisions regarding the incoming data to form the 1-bit audio signal. The LSI uses internal memory to take data that's output intermittently from the disc, rearrange it, and order it into continuous 1-bit audio streams.
Sony's Video Equalizer enables you to fine-tune the picture quality of each disc you watch. You can adjust picture, brightness, color, hue, and chroma delay in addition to graphical gamma adjustment. And once you've optimized the picture for a particular disc, the DVP-NS555ES can commit your settings to memory (for up to 30 discs).
In DVD-Video playback, the ultimate in picture detail comes into direct conflict with the ultimate in picture clarity. Sony ES Series players, like the DVP-NC555ES, achieve superb fine picture detail and excellent clarity thanks to 108 MHz and 216 MHz oversampling in the D/A converter. This corresponds to 8x oversampling for progressive scan, 16x for interlaced playback.
Sony's pixel-by-pixel active I/P conversion feature includes built-in motion detection, enabling the DVP-NC555ES to generate the ideal progressive scanning output for each type of DVD source:

Film originated material. For footage originally shot on 24-frames-per-second film or film-like 24-frame progressive video, the Sony system automatically and flawlessly detects the 3:2 cadence and performs full 3:2 reverse conversion. Mismatched film frames are never "force-fit" into a single video frame, and the system adds no motion blurring.
Film-originated material on a DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW. DVD recorders complicate the I/P conversion processes because they capture everything as interlaced video. Even if they were originally shot on film, movies stored on disc are recorded as 30-frames-per-second interlaced, not 24-frames-per-second progressive. In this case, conventional 3:2 reverse conversion will not work, but Sony's pixel-by-pixel active I/P conversion will, thanks to its built-in motion detection system.
Film material intercut with interlaced video material. Sony's pixel-by-pixel active I/P conversion applies appropriate processing for film elements and video elements, even when they alternate in rapid-fire sequence, as they might during the "making of" documentary on a movie DVD.
Interlaced-video-originated material. Shooting on conventional, interlaced video means capturing a new field of 240 interlaced scanning lines every 1/60 second. When subjects are moving, there can be significant differences from each field to the next. Sony's pixel-by-pixel active I/P conversion applies special processing for video originated material.

Tech Talk
SACD: Super Audio CD (SACD) is a new high-quality audio disc standard where music is recorded in the DSD (Direct Stream Digital) format (conventional CDs are recorded in the PCM format). The DSD format, using a sampling frequency 64 times higher than that of a conventional CD and with 1-bit quantization, achieves both a wide frequency range and a wide dynamic range across the audible frequency range, providing music reproduction extremely faithful to the original sound. The SACD has two types: a two-channel stereo disc and a multichannel disc that holds up to six independent channels. The multichannel characteristic of the SACD features a speaker allocation system basically similar to the 5.1 channel output of current AV systems.
What's in the Box
DVP-NC555ES 5-disc DVD/SACD/CD changer, RMT-D160A remote, 2 AA batteries, power cord, A/V RCA cable, and printed operating instructions.

Sony MD-CASE4 Minidisc Walkman Armband Carry Case Review

Sony MD-CASE4 Minidisc Walkman Armband Carry Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this armband case for the RH910. The extra pocket will fit an MD without the sleeve, but the velcro will just about make it to the hook fabric for the flap to stay shut. Frankly, the pocket stores headphones better than the MD. The case has a side opening for the headphone/remote jack. The downside is I cannot control the RH910 easily while it is in the case. I suggest getting the remote. The armband does not easily slip off your arm, and is removable. There is an eye ring to the side of the case which could be used creatively to hook on to something
