Sony CMT-MD1 Compact Stereo System Review

Sony CMT-MD1 Compact Stereo System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sony combined a bookshelf CD player with an MiniDisc player/recorder in the stylish CMT-MD1. Despite its small size, it has surprisingly good sound quality even with the standard speakers. It comes with the standard features of a bookshelf player: built-in tuner, an equalizer which lets you select different settings only from its preset settings. The fact that you can't adjust the equalizer manually is a little bit disappointing, as is the lack of an optical output.
Due to its size, and perhaps for stylistic reasons, many of its functions are accessible only from the remote. And for stylistic purposes, the unit comes shipped with gray and blue covers for the speakers.

Product Description:
This desktop hi-fi system features CD/MD synchro recording, which simplifies making cassettes or MDs from CDs. It releases from record/pause mode automatically when the CD player begins to play. When you record a MiniDisc, you can name the disc and each individual track--your names will appear not only in the front panel of your own system, but also in the panels of other compatible MD players. The Disc Memo display lets you assign an alphanumeric name to your discs. Names are displayed on the front panel. The auto tuning feature scans up and down the band for stations, while the stereo/mono switch lets you choose mono for low-noise enjoyment of distant stereo stations.

I had this player for about four months and it was my first portable CD player. It wasn't that good, but I thought it was ok because I didn't know any better. That is, until this player completely quit on me out of nowhereand I bought an AIWA player that's the same price as this one that's around1,000 times better than this player.
This Sony model has passable sound, but other than that, it skips almost constantly. I couldn't even walk downstairs without it making that skipping sound almost non-stop. The AIWA V-50is a smaller player that's almost infinitely better. This Sony modeldoesn't even have a pause button!

An automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) function can be used to limit the maximum volume for hearing safety. A hold switch locks the buttons to prevent accidental button presses. Sony STR-DH800 7.1-Channel Audio Video Receiver (Black) Review

Sony STR-DH800 7.1-Channel Audio Video Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I know just enough about Audio to be dangerous but I'm not a true audiophile (or whatever they're called). So I don't know how an average person would figure this out when it took me an hour and a half on the phone with Sony support before THEY figured it out.

Now this is my second Sony receiver and I purchased this one specifically to go along with my brand new Sony BDP-S360 Blu Ray player. I used brand new HDMI category 2 cables into the receiver and then out to my Sony HDTV. This is suppossed to be the BEST way to get true no-loss sound decoding and picture. Well I was shocked when my receiver was NOT decoding DTS audio. All Dolby Digital tracks were playing in perfect 5.1 surround sound...the DTS tracks played back in Linear PCM stereo. So after I read the manuals, updated the firmware and set everything right then trying a few DVDs and Blu Ray discs I contacted Sony Support via email. Several exchanges later they asked me to call in to better troubleshoot my issue. First I talked to the blu ray guy (since I wasn't sure which device was causing the issue) and after resetting the player and checking all the setting I was transfered to the Audio department. Once again we reset the machine to factory setting, checked all the set ups and still nothing changed (Did I mention that I had to unhook and reconnect several cables and I even had an optical cable running to my old Sony Reciever?). Then 1 1/2 hours into the phone call he asked if I was getting audio through the TV speakers which I was and he said "oh its set to TV + Amp". So we changed that setting to just "Amp" and bingo...DTS surround sound!! I said "but that's the factory default setting". He told me where the info was in the manual but I checked an NOWHERE in the manual does it say that when using the receiver as a passthrough via HDMI inorder to decode a DTS signal the receiver must be set to "Amp" only and not the default setting of "TV + Amp". What the...??

So now the receiver works great even decoding the new DTS-HD Master Audio off my "Watchmen" Blu Ray disc. But be warned that if you use the HDMI inputs to decode your surround sound be sure to change the system to "Amp" instead of the default "TV + Amp" unless you enjoy stereo sound from your suround sound system. This may be the case for other Sony receivers so be aware when buying that factory default setting may not allow for optimum performance and the Sony guys might not be aware of this little fact if you call them.

We bought this DVD player after our other one started having all kinds of problems after several years of serving us quite well. This DVD player works well.At first, we couldn't figure out why it was playing our widescreen movies at full screen, but figured out that we had to stop the movie and reset our TV type in the DVD menu, and that fixed it.

It works fine for us.We have a non-digital TV and just want something to play our movies.

I have owned this product for 4 months. I wonder how I ever got along without it. This is the first time the advertising was true. I live in a very rural area, the land of cattle trails. I plug this into my car and no matter how bummpy the road gets the music will not skip. I have tried :-). This product has been attacked by a 4 year old, dropped, kicked and generally abused. It still keeps going! The best feature is the g-shock and when engaged it will not skip. The sound is incredible. The batteries last for 36 hours of contunious music and will charge the batteries from the car cig plug in or the a/c outlet if you have rechargable batteries. My only beef with it is that the recharger on the unit could be better as it does not charge the batteries all the way. In all I would buy this product again.

The CX225 is a really good deal for a Sony 200 Disc changer. and you don't really realize how great a changer is till you get one. If you have a lot of CDs and want to listen to them fairly this sony is great. The opticalout is nice, and it changes fairly quickly.
The only downfall is theblock system, which is a nice convenince, but you can only put 25 CDs in ablock and you cannot play from multiple blocks (all 200 discs or just 25).
If you have more money to spend ... go for the higher end players withCD-TEXT, but the insert organizers that came with the 225 work fine for me.If you are on a budget like me, leave the money for MORE CDS!!

Sony CFD-G500 CD Radio Cassette Recorder Boombox (Black) Review

Sony CFD-G500 CD Radio Cassette Recorder Boombox
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This (the CFD-G500) is the successor to the Sony CFD-G70.I own both. The sound of the CFD-G500 has better definition (is cleaner), is louder, and even has cleaner bass than the CFD-G70.It easily provides music for a water aerobics class that takes place in a swimming pool that is the size of a tennis court. (In fact, before being a pool, it was a tennis court.)

I had worried that the G500's sound would suffer from lack of separate tweeters, which the G70 does have. Not to worry.I don't know how Sony did it.

The G500 also has some improvement in the user interface (compared to the G70):the volume control have moved from the top to the front and is colored silver rather than the same color as the box itself, and Line-In is on top rather than at the bottom of the front.

Note that as I write this, Amazon's link named "Technical Data" is inaccurate in at least the following.Takes 8 batteries, not 6:Weighs 18 lbs with batteries (15.5 lbs without), not "7.25 with batteries," and its size is substantially larger than 15.25 x 6.5 x 10 inches.

In summary, this is the best-sounding battery-powered boombox that I've ever heard, and I've heard many boomboxes in the last 30 years.

Product Description:
Sony's CFD-G500 CD/radio cassette recorder offers a compact chassis, several sound-enhancement options, and remote-control convenience--not to mention an aggressive, black-and-red power-drive design. Stereo 4-inch speakers are augmented by a third, 4-inch Power Drive Woofer, all driven by a powerful 20 watts RMS total. The unit's CD player uses a one-bit digital-to-analog audio converter with 8x oversampling for pristine sound, and audio CD-R/CD-RW compatibility means the boombox will play your home-brewed music mixes as well as prerecorded CDs.
The CFD-G500's digital AM/FM stereo tuner offers 30 station presets (20 FM, 10 AM). Four electronic sound modes (rock/pop/jazz/vocal) let you tailor the sound for listening to various different types of music or in different environments, while the unit's unique Power Drive settings (off, 1, and 2) enhance low-frequencies in any sound mode. A cool red light atop the device indicates PDW-on status.
A remote control with 10-key direct-access buttons works for CD tracks and radio presets, while various CD play modes (program/shuffle/repeat) let you hear tracks in multiple ways: in sequence (as recorded), in program order (up to 20 tracks), all tracks in random (shuffle) order, or as a single track repeating over and over.
With synchronized CD/cassette dubbing, CD playback commences just after cassette recording begins. The stereo record/playback cassette deck provides direct recording from either the tuner, the CD player. Meanwhile, an analog minijack (.125-inch) stereo line input lets you hookup anything from your laptop to an MP3 player or a portable DVD player. The unit runs on the supplied AC power cord or six D batteries. The remote uses 2 AA batteries (no batteries are included).

Samsung BD-P1200 Blu-ray Disc Player Review

Samsung BD-P1200 Blu-ray Disc Player

I received this player yesterday. Connected it to my Samsung 42 inch Plasma 1080i with an HDMI and Fiber optic audio cable to my Yamaha sound system. It took maybe 20 minutes and what a result. Beautiful picture and like wise with the sound! I put Mel Gibson's Blu-ray version of Apocalypto in and enjoyed my home Theater! It seems as if you could walk into the scene.
I had no trouble with the start up or playing of the disk. I also tried two regular DVD's and they were upgraded on the Blu-ray player. So far I am very pleased with the operation and quality of the player. The price was very reasonable for a Blu-ray player on todays market.
It is one week later and I have ordered a second Samsung BD-P1200 for my 50 inch Vizio 1080i plasma. I hooked my first one one to it and what a difference! so now I have two movie theaters one in the bedroom and one in my living room. I think one big difference is the fiber optic audio cable and HDMI cable. I bought both from Amazon for the price of maybe half of one at best buy. I do not believe in those high dollar HDMI cables, that do the same job as the less expensive ones. Great picture and Great sound.
I have to address an item on a lot of reviews as to this unit will not have all the features of the next model. If you wait until they stop improving electronics you would never buy anything. They constantly are upgrading and improving everything. Did consumers wait for DVD's when VHS was popular? If you did you lost a lot of watching movies at home.
After having this player several months,I cannot believe the bad reviews! I bought two of them and so far no problems at all. They have played everything I put in them. Maybe It is my TV's or my luck but so far very good player.11/21/2007

Sony SRF-HM10 S2 Sports Street-Style FM Radio Walkman Review

Sony SRF-HM10 S2 Sports Street-Style FM Radio Walkman
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a bicycle commuter I've been looking for quite a while for the ideal radio to use while riding. Seeing Sony's SRF-HM10 recently in the store had me hoping I'd found it, but it turns out I was disappointed again.

My current - and so far - best solution is Sony's SRF-M85V radio with Shure's e2c earbuds. The sound insulation the e2c earbuds provide is simply unmatched by anything else I've seen elsewhere, including the HM10's earbuds, which unfortunately just don't go deep enough to make a tight seal.

But the biggest disappointment of the HM10 is its radio reception that is probably the worst in the line of Sony's S2 sports radios. In most pocket radios the headphone cord doubles as the FM antenna and so I thought that the HM10 must have a more advanced antenna system and/or radio receiver to make up for the lack of a long headphone cord. But this is not the case. This becomes painfully apparent when holding the hand close to the receiver when tuned in to a weak radio station. This alone improves radio reception, so your hand acts as the antenna.

Other than that, the controls are fairly straightforward. Channel preset up-down buttons that double as tuning controls, volume up-down buttons, bass boost and power button with Local and DX setting are fairly easy to learn and discern, since when wearing the radio all controls are behind your head. Wearing the radio seems comfortable, although I didn't try for long periods of time or in a high impact sports activity.

Also, I don't understand why a station scan isn't featured, but this seems to be no different than from the other S2 radios from Sony.

Unlike the description the radio is for FM reception only (no AM, no Weather band, and certainly no TV band) and provides for 15 FM station presets. A nice detail is that if you program fewer than 15 stations into the radio you don't have to cycle through all the unused slots when going from your last to your first station preset.

If it wasn't for the unacceptable reception capabilities and haphazard earbuds, that don't really seal very well, this would be a killer product.

So, unless you only want to listen to the strongest stations in your area, don't waste your money.

Sony D-NE319 MP3/ATRAC CD Walkman (Blue) Review

Sony D-NE319 MP3/ATRAC CD Walkman
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This player is the best for only 40 bucks at walmart. It has a lot of features, including custom equalizer, 3x bass boost, track time left, and it also memorizes your place and resumes it after you stop it and play it again. It also only uses 1 battery at a time and lives for up to 41 hours on just that one battery.

Minor problems: buttons kind of small and sound is not the best quality at the highest volume, and no backlight (if this is a big problem for you, bring a flashlight).

But it is overall the best product out there you can get inexpensively with tons of great features and a massive crapload of mp3 memory and features.

However, I must edit this review now to say that I got a cheap Creative MuVo mp3 player and it is MUCH better.

Sony DAV-FR1 5-Disc Progressive Scan DVD Dream System Review

Sony DAV-FR1 5-Disc Progressive Scan DVD Dream System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was pretty skeptical about a home-theater-in-a-box until I got this new Sony system home and tried it out.I already had a really good component-based home theater, but this system was a promotional purchase along with my new Sony HDTV, and the price was too good to pass up.Set-up took about 45 minutes, but the resulting sound is awesome! The bass is wonderful - when the Norah Jones CD is playing, my living room sounds like a jazz club!

I had recently purchased the Sony NS-575P single-disc DVD player and was stunned by its video performance and slick operation. It looks as though the changer in the FR1 uses similar software, or atleast, the same user interface and it is great!I like how it displays the disc's artwork as a screen background. The reasons why I'm happy with this Sony changer are similar to why I am also so happy with the stand-alone player I had to move to the den - it decodes virtually EVERYTHING you can throw at it... mp3, SACD (!), and DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD with JPEGS, etc.

And, the all-in-one package means a minimum of wires.Quite frankly, I'm really impressed with this "dream system"... it delivers big sound and convenience for much less money than I expected to have to pay! Thanks, Sony!

Update:Just listened to/watched the Star Wars trilogy on DVD and the sound (and video) is very impressive. In particular, the dialogue was always audible, even when the music and other sound effects were active.

Also:There is one thing that bugs me about this player - this is my first carousel CD or DVD changer (I've had a magazine changer forever), so I don't know if this is par for the course or not, but it takes a fairly long amount of time to load a disc into an empty slot... you can hear lots of stuff going on inside the box, but it's never clear WHEN it's OK to go ahead and load the disc. But maybe this is true of all carousel-style changers.

Just FYI: No color/saturation problems can be detected with my system. I use component video outputs with an HDTV widescreen monitor (see my other reviews) and I stand by the stunning images I see - my DVD collection, as I stated above, is BRAND NEW again!

I purchased this radio and installed it myself about a week ago.I love it.It looks great and it is so simple and easy to use!

I have no idea why people are saying the interface is bad and it takes a ton of clicks to get anywhere.Maybe they are taking the long way? It takes me no more than 5-10 seconds to make any adjustments.I also find the volume very easy to control. You don't accidentally enter any menus by adjusting the volume. You would definitely have to try to get into the menus.

The flip down to access the CD drive is great - it keeps it clean and lasts longer. The colors are great and the removable faceplate keeps the radio from being stolen.

The sound clarity is amazing as well. The USB port is great.I just plug in my iPod with the cable that came with it (same one you use to hook it up to your computer). It charges it and I can control the songs right from my radio! No sense in paying for the auxiliary cable PLUS cable to charge it because you can do it all through the USB that came with the iPod.

I'm beyond happy with my choice! I would highly recommend this radio and would definitely buy it again.

Sony BRAVIA EX 700 Series 40-Inch Edge LED Backlit LCD HDTV, Black Review

Sony BRAVIA EX 700 Series 40 inch Edge LED Backlit LCD HDTV, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In my experience, this tv is just ok, while I expect Sony products to be the best. The menu structure, the remote, the apps (I really don't know why every manufacturer keeps putting an internet connection in their tvs - my blu-ray, has it, my PS3 and Xbox360, too - why do I need to pay for this duplicate function?), the thin design and the build are all right. The image quality is clearly imperfect, however.

First, the blacks have a clear blue tinge. I think it's because of the LED side illumination, because my old XBR4 didn't have this defect.

Second, the viewing angle is bad. As soon as yoy stray from a central viewing position, the blacks begin to wash out significantly. From about a 45 degree angle they become a blueish-gray mess.

I thought I could live with this nuisances, but my tv developed a dead pixel in a week, so I decided to return it. Amazon's service was, of course, top notch.

In exchange I bought a (cheaper) Bravia EX500. In my opinion the image quality is clearly better, beacause of deeper blacks and the perfect viewing angles. I noticed a little more motion blur and you lose the thin frame, the Xross menu system and the internet connection, but I can trade these for image quality anytime.

Now I see you can get the 40' EX700 at $749 everywhere, I guess nobody is buying.

Those of you who are looking for a really good portable CD Player, I would recommend this one. The sound is VERY clear and crisp, and the volume has a nice range that can go pretty high. I like the little clip-on controller that comes with it. I was confused at how to hook up the controller at first and there are no intructions anywhere on it in the owner's manual (that I could find), but I finally figured it out after awhile. So for those of you who may be confused also, you connect the controller into the earphone jack and then connect the earphones to a jack that is on the back of the controller. This is a very nice CD Player and great for the money, too, I think. I don't think you'd be disappointed.

Product Description:
Sony's D-EJ100 augments its great sound and extensive features with a stylish, blue, full-circle exterior. And at a mere .94 inches thick, this Walkman lives up to its name, traveling with ease in pocket, purse, or backpack. Playback options include 32-track programming, repeat (track, disc, or program), random play, and an amazing 50 hours of playback from a pair of standard AA batteries (not included). A clip-on remote makes it easy to operate the player while you're on the go, and Sony's "h.ear" clip-on headphones are designed for streamlined comfort.
"Active use" is a key phrase for this player: Sony's Skip-Free G-Protection boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. The D-EJ100's heat-resistant lid helps protect the player against high-temperature build up, especially when you're using it outdoors or in a vehicle.
You can hook the player up with your home system through an analog stereo "Y" interconnect. Should your music require it, the Walkman's Digital Mega Bass Sound engages digital processing to enhance your music with deep, authentic bass tones.
Bookmark playback lets you program your favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button, and Sony's automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) conserves batteries--and guards your hearing--by capping your listening level at either of two settings. The player may be used with optional AC/DC power adapters (AC-E45HG or -E45A) or car accessories (vehicle power cord: DCC-E345 or -E34CP, car kit CPA-9).

Sony NAS-CZ1 Network Audio Player and Shelf System Review

Sony NAS-CZ1 Network Audio Player and Shelf System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Network Audio Player has outstanding sound, and easily fits on my bookshelf. The black and silver case design is a huge improvement over the cheap plastic look of many bookshelf systems sold today.

One of the best features is the ability of the unit to play music stored on your computer hard drive. From my existing music library that I created using Windows Media Player, the NAS-CZ1 plays the music one song after another, album by album. You can also create playlists if you want selected songs.

The challenge is to get the software and the NAS-CZ1 configured. I would say that this is a project for someone with some hands-on home networking skills, as I wanted a wireless setup. Since the NAS-CZ1 requires an Ethernet cable, I used a Linksys wap54 wireless access point to connect to my home wireless network.

All the internet features are provided through the Sony software called m-crew server. There is very little documentation on this software, even when I looked using Google. It is also version 1.0 and there apparently are no updates to the software that comes on the cd with the unit. M-Crew server is a very straightforward, no-frills solution to broadcasting music to the NAS-CZ1. There are a few things about it though. First, you need to use some version of Windows XP. Windows 2000,2003, 98, etc. will not work and the installer on the cd will stop you from proceeding. So you must have an XP computer that is on whenever you want to listen to music stored on your hard disk. This means that when I want to fall asleep to the music, I need to leave my computer running.

You need to remember that the account you installed the m-crew server software needs to be logged in. This is because the software runs background processes that won't be started until the account user logs in. Not a problem if you have a single user account login on the computer and the computer is re-booted for some reason, but I will have to look at setting up the computer to automatically startup the software background services when the computer re-boots. I found this out when Microsoft rebooted my pc for one of their automatic software updates. The connection from my NAS-CZ1 just stopped working until I re-logged into the account again.

One other problem with the m-crew server software or possibly the NAS-CZ1 is that you cannot have songs with titles using Asian characters. So any Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc. songs will not play on the NAS-CZ1. In fact, the m-crew server software will let you store a say, Chinese titled song just fine. The problem arises when the NAS-CZ1 tries to play it. It will error out and you need to skip the song and restart the player manually. To delete the song, you need to (and they don't tell you this in the documentation) edit the m-crew server content database table using MS Access to delete the row containing the song, or edit out the Asian characters and you can then play the song. It seems that the NAS-CZ1 only has the ability to display english characters and that is why it errors on non-english titles. You would think that an international company like Sony would release product that accommodates languages other than english character based items.

If all else fails with the m-crew server software, uninstall and install it again.

Internet radio is another interesting feature that, if you can get running, sounds really nice. First, choose internet radio stations with a bit rate of no less than 32k, for decent sound. Second, forget about any radio stations that use their own radio player (do not use Windows media player), or require Real Player. If the radio station url does not end with an "aspx", then you can be pretty sure it won't work on the NAS-CZ1. Sony provides about 10 sample stations for the NAS-CZ1, but does not tell you how to find more radio stations. So the problems is finding internet radio sations and testing them to see if they work on the NAS-CZ1. Time consuming at best, and I have not tried searching for more stations outside of my initial setup effort of the NAS-CZ1.

At this time, I am impressed with the technology that Sony put into this unit, but I can also see a lot of buyers looking for a quick and easy way of listening to music on their computer hard dirve returning this unit due to the complicated setup and troubleshooting needed. I bought my NAS-CZ1 at Fry's for $189 and it was their last boxed unit, that was a return.

Personally, I like the unit and now that I have figured out the limitations and quirks, I'm considering a second unit for my home office. It is a real delight to be able to have my entire music collection available without having to manually change cds.

This DVD player is excellent for computer people who want to play back their cd's or DVD's that have Divx / Xvid encoded files. Flows smoothly and even presents a menu list of what the titles are providing the filewas named on the computer.
